Mechanic Charged In Girl's Death
Officials in Sarasota, Fla., said they have found the body of Carlie Brucia and have charged Joseph P. Smith with murder.
Brucia was a Florida sixth-grader seen on a car wash surveillance camera's recording being led away by a man Sunday. The man in the video is seen talking to the girl, who doesn't appear to know him.
A law enforcement source said Brucia's body was found early Friday morning at a church parking lot -- not far from the car wash. The source said investigators found her dead after negotiations with Smith, who was previously said not to be cooperating.
Friends of the girl's family have gathered outside the Central Church of Christ, which is near a hay field and some woods. The church is ringed by yellow crime scene tape, and police detectives could be seen examining the area.
The church's minister said a Bible study group met there on Wednesday night -- but nobody noticed a body because it was dark. The minister said, "we all feel helpless when things like this happen."
Carlie's stepfather and some friends came to the edge of the church property, kneeling in a prayer circle near the crime scene tape. Outside the girl's home, others joined hands and bowed their heads in prayer. The house is decorated with banners reading,"We love you, Carlie."
Smith, 37, is an unemployed mechanic with a criminal record being held in the kidnapping and murder, according to The Associated Press. According to police, Smith continued to refuse to answer questions about the 11-year-old girl. He has been held without bail since Tuesday on an alleged probation violation stemming from a cocaine possession conviction.
Sarasota County Sheriff Bill Balkwill said, "Joseph Smith is under arrest for the abduction and murder of Carlie."
South Florida authorities said Thursday that "strong evidence" links Smith to Brucia's kidnapping. Authorities believe Smith (pictured, below right) is the tattooed man in a mechanic's shirt on the tape. He was taken into custody on a tip from a woman who lives with him.
The sheriff choked back tears as he announced the girl's death Friday morning. Regarding Smith, another sheriff's official said, "We now stand ready to complete our obligation, and assure you that he will pay the ultimate price for what he did to her."
State records show that Smith has been arrested at least 13 times in Florida since 1993. He was arrested in 1997 on kidnapping and false imprisonment charges -- but was acquitted a year later. Other arrests range from misdemeanor battery to felony drug possession charges.
If a Florida probation officer had been successful, Smith could have been back behind bars more than a month ago.
According to an official at the Florida Department of Corrections, a probation officer had asked a judge to declare Smith in violation of his probation on Dec. 30. That's because Smith hadn't paid all his fines and court costs.
But the official says a judge refused to find Smith in violation -- which could have returned him to jail.

My thoughts: I don't know for sure why this particular story got to me. Very rarely that something in the media will get to me (9/11/01 being a very obvious exception, of course) but this one, has just angered me to a whole new level. Mind you, I was just checking Yahoo when I saw this under one of the top headlines. So I decided to check my regional news' website to check it out, and it's left me with bitterness, resentment and hatred. Anyway, I am a writer. I don't say I'm a good one, but I love to write. Fiction: comedy, drama, action, etc. A while back I was pondering the idea of writing a story about a kidnap/murder but the perpetrator gets away, and the parent seeks them out for revenge, using my personal fav. handgun, which is in my sig. Now, after this incident with this kidnap/murder in real life, I am really pushed to write the story now. Maybe doing that will relieve me of the anger I am feeling right now. I had to get all this off of my chest. |

if you really wanna write a killer (no pun intended) story about that then you really have to understand how these people work. Read the end of alice by AM Homes. simply a sickening accurate tale about a pedophile. another good book is called the anatomy of motive by john douglas.
that'll add realism to your story. But it sounds like this guy has been slowly working up to his crime since he has had kidnapping charges before. Those prior crimes build up his confidense so he can carry this out. teh stupid ass got caught on camera so he is screwed.....at least he was smart enough not to cooperate or ese would be done already.
yeah it is a sad thing learning how many psychos are actually around here and can strike anywhere. Next time you are walking around at night look around at easy targets. You'll see many vulnerabilities.
eh, I could talk for days on these sickos, but I got shiat to do. |

Thx for friendly advice, Boomer. Any criticism to improve my writing is welcome. Yes, your theory about his past crimes building up his confidence makes sense...its like, they get an ego trip, like they can pull it off over and over and never get caught...I sincerely hope this son of a bitch gets the chair. |

| What's messed up is that he's had a bunch of kidnapping, sexual abuse charges put against him in the past yet he's out on the street and able to commit a crime like this. |

| Yes, and we've heard about a few killers/murderers who were set loose because of 'technicalities' or stupid judges who can't see the obvious; which is this guy gets a 'kick' out of committing atrocities such as this and will do it again. On an extreme personal note: I don't have children, nor do I want any, but I can't begin to imagine what that little girl's parents are going through right now. |

the court system is set up to protect the "rights" of the accused, not the rights of the victims. I mean look how far forensics has come and all the amazing things they can do.....yet if one step is fouled up out goes the case.
it is almost as much of a tragedy to have an innocent man go to jail for a crime, but when so much evidence and common sense adds up to someone...it has to be them.
but that never happens. The accused get a crafty lawyer and walks...*cough*OJ*cough*. but I guess we don't have to worry about rotting in rpison for crimes since we can get away with them due to stipulations.
eh oh well |

This may sound barbaric to some people, but let's PRAY that it gets put to good use in this case.
And I'm damn sure there will be rape evidence. |

In Illinois there were 17 people on death row found innocent by DNA evidence. For that reason I am against the death penalty because it's pretty much a certainty innocent people have been killed by the state.
But yeah I wouldn't have a problem with the death penalty for this guy if he indeed killed her, and I don't oppose it on any other grounds other than the fact innocent people have been put to death. |

Here, I've made a proof:
If

Then

I should have been a lawyer. |

| I'm definately very against the death penalty. All I hear about is some guy that didn't do it, while his family goes and watches him die. It breaks my heart...And besides that, I don't feel it is the authorities right to take a mans life. However, i guess ther are other sides to the argument as well. it would save some money, and jail space...and thats what america needs now, badly...and not only that, but i think it would scare off some criminals. |
