just a thought, can anyone do it with enough practice, or do you have to have been given a natural talent by god/whoever and then practice loads, discuss:)

it will have to be a lot more than the ability to spin records, such as been a producer as well, contacts, having good luck etc...

imo promotion is more of a key to sucuess than ur actual skill. if u market urself better than someone who actually has more skill than you, you'll win. i know some excellent DJ's who have been DJ'ing years and are better than Armin and Tijs, but they dont market themselves, they just play week in week out at virtually the same places and wont advance further than that. when armin was getting famous, he did things like his free remix of iio rapture and free gigs. all paid off tho.

I think uve misunderstood rick's question here .. i dont think hes after whether its possible to make it to the top but rather whether its possible to possess the djing skills on a par with some of the top djs ..

I reckon yes probably .. its not like the top djs dont fck up anyhow so no1 is perfect ..

I'm talking about the ability to just play as good, not to make it big time:)

Yeah i think its too hard to quantify exactly what 'playing good' is, whether it comes down to track selection and setting a mood for a set, whether it comes down to the politics of choosing a set list or the pleasure of playing what you or your audience want to hear.

I think it comes down to whether you're a fan of seamless crossovers, acapella'ing, whether you can use tracks to match mood, energy or be abrupt, i guess it just comes down to personal tastes and the styles of music you like.

Where do a dj's skills start and end, is a set performed entirely thru digital sequencing dj'ing? is sampling, bootlegging and effects on the fly part of a set of dj's skills? or is it simple spinning?

i think there is a certain element of natural skill involved to become as good as the people at the top. Its not all about beat matching and mixing, you have to remember there is so much more to djing than just mixing one track into another again and again, as i have discovered in my endevours with techno.

agreed, anyone with enough practice can be as good as say tiesto, or armin, as all they do is mix one track into another with a certain element of structure to the set. but to be say as good as chris liebing, that takes natural skill and talent, as well as years of practice (and 4 decks).

coup is right about the promotion and stuff, but i dont really think that was the question ;)

yes, easily. a lot of the top producers are big dj's because of their tracks.

i think eddie halliwell is the highest only-dj, or zebeila if u dont count his bootlegs as productions.

also contacts are a main thing too.

In that case then I guess you can if you practice hours every day and play in clubs regularly to get the feel

To some degree u have to have a little talent but if u work hard enough and practice u can easily mix aswell as the likes of armin and tiesto. Even tricks and things like that u have to have some talent but a lot of it does come down to practice still, if ur willing to practice different tricks a few hours a day ur gonna become capable of pulling a few tricks off but generally the more naturally talented people will pick things up quicker and will probably always be that bit better at it.

In summary...

Technical Ability: Yes, just requires practice. (And lots of it.)
Crowd Reading/Set Structure: Yes, but requires a bit more intuition and regularly playing out.
Making it to the top: Only if you know the right people.
