for example, sikhs wear a traditional "knife" on them, that, keep it at home. |
But they're also required to keep their hair long and keep it wrapped up in a bun when they're young and in a turban when they get older... would this also be considered religios iconography? What about just the long hair on an indian boy, its a striking image, and one can almost immediately say the kid is Sikh... should they ban kids from growing their hair long too? What about the school canteen - can they have kosher/khalal food? I say take the simple solution: Shave everyone's heads, make them all eat French food (you'd hate for French kids to have foreign cultures and customs pushed on them), make everyone wear blue contact lenses... and voila! School without cuktural repression (I mean of French culture, by others). What a liberal concept! |

you're right no turbans or buns, indians/sikhs will have to figure out a way.

Hmm, actually I'm not sure about that. But when you mentioned satanic iconography, I'm certain that most american schools wouldn't tolerate children wearing those either. |
That reminds me. I went to a catholic school and part of the deal was that we would have an assembly to observe christian holidays such like Easter, etc. For one of these celebrations, a classmate of mine wore his White Zombie t-shirt with "Say you love Satan" written on the back of it :stongue:
It was pretty funny, the vice-prinicipal made him wear a shirt over it. |

So you think this is cool ?

I think not. | But the thing is that in Islam, women aren't supposed to cover their faces like that. Women who dress like that in the picture are not doing what their religion tells them. They are taking it upon themselves to dress like that. |

| Also, yes, even the Jews would not be allowed to their yarmulks (spelling?) and Christians cannot wear large crosses under Chirac's plan. |

Heh, it's funny how here you defend the cultural heritage of the immigrants while in the Singapore thread you defended the local population's right to exercise their own culture and beliefs upon foreigners. Really, if people can't adapt to the local culture and customs I don't see what they're doing in a country in the first place. Now, as for the Sikhs, I really don't think anyone would object to a kid having long hair. It does not have to be a representation of a religious orientation, since a person can have long hair for various reasons. Now, about older sikhs wearing turbans, well, if they want to wear a turban then they shouldn't teach in schools, it's that simple.

You're quite wrong. The only place where women are allowed to expose their faces is their home, and only before their relatives. When they go outside, they are required to hide their faces, as well as they are not allowed to leave the house without some male family members as an escort. Really, this is a point where religion becomes opressive and in direct violation of human rights. |

I don't care how they dress, but what I'm opposed to are situations such as on this picture - how can this woman be all covered on an official driving licence photo? It's sick!! |

Drug_tito for a rare time, you are completely wrong. Its not their face that their supposed to cover at all time. Its their hair and body in general. Not the face.
Those "burkas" are inventions from ultra conservative muslim and do not represent all of the muslims. |
