Opening tracks for a set...

I've noticed that on a lot of CDs and club events that a lot of DJs just open up to their set list. I can say that I'm guilty of this.

What are some good introduction tracks that have good pads and melodies that just seem to meld and tear each other apart before the actual playlist comes into play?

*Bk & Cristopher Lawrence- Warp(nukleuz)
*Digital Pressure- Hey Kids (am recordings)

Whoa, many thanks! I'm actually trying to get a nice set going. It's been a while since I've made a demo. I have Starchaser - Falling Star on my playlist, but I see it more as a transition track rather than an opening track. I'll check out the others.

Yeah for Starchaser it depends, I like to use it in chilled sets as an opening track, the others I listed are pretty hard core though!

Actually, I'm trying to create an ethereal atmosphere that taunts your emotions. I want this set to start sad and mellow and eventually it builds up to the point where it's so beautiful that at the end, the listener cries.

And if you didn't know, I spin progressive trance/epic trance...

LOL
Dj_Hypnotiq
Ah dope same here I usually do prgressive/melow trance but have recently been learnin how to spin some UK hard house. The one I would suggest for building your set out of the ones I listed is definetly;
*Marcos- Red Bullet (Musikman Remix)
sounds similar to Warp Brothers- Phatt Bass but I think it's way sicker!
I first heard PVD. blast this one as his opening song on his Cream Amnesia Ibiza closing party set. and ever since I've used it in my sets, everybody keeps asking what song it is another 2 great for mid build is *Tatana & Mystery- Soul Cry (Mystery Remix), or *Donald & Giles- Weekend Wonder (D & G mix)but those took me quite a while to find myself, so they're kinda rare but not impossible to find!
Another is this old school one I have called *Marc Aurel- The Sun (dominator remix)it was on tech mix live I think!

I would be inclined to agree with Unknown DJ on this. Some of these tracks are a little too hard to be the first thing you drop. Alphazone is usually peak time stuff without a doubt.

It also depends on the scenario you are playing in. If it's a CD, I think I now what you are after.
For example when I play new years eve I usually drop Ferry's remix of Adagio for strings if I have the 12 slot. Dropping it in from the breakdown. It is a bit of an exception as people are already excited on the night so you can get away with a bit of cheese. (And before anyone says Tiesto rip off... I was doing it before I saw the DVD, and I now it's his version. Rumored to be up for release in March so I hear).

It's very different in a club and depending on which slot you have and who you actually are will determin what you can and can't do. If you play an intro as a warm up, people will probably tell you to f*ck off.

I can see the artistic appeal of doing it on a CD mix though but would advise against it if you are doing a demo to send to clubs.

My offering though as an intro for a personal mix CD would be Envio - 'Touched by the Sun' (Envio's Sunrise Remix).

Cheers
Nem

EDIT - I should also mention that it must also be relative to where you want to finish with your set. Don't blast them and then go progressive. The thing about sets is that you can't really go backwards with energy too much. Always start a little cooler than you intend to go, then fire it up. If you are playing a two hour set then play with them (the crowd/listeners) for the first hour and give hints of something comming and then release it in the last hour. Just an example.

Well those were just suggestions! but where I Dj. out in California that's pretty much how it's done, start hard and end hard. While it's not my favorite way to mix as I prefer mellow, I can say mellow does'nt exactly draw a crowd out here. But Marcos Red Bullet, & Digital Pressure Aftershock are'nt too hard; but Alphazone is definetly as hard as it comes. But you are right, it pretty much depends on who you play after; as most of the hardcore people come on before me at gigs, I pretty much usually have to start hard, and end light. I tried doing it the other way around once, and it did'nt get a good reaction from the crowd!
I would prefer to do it like you suggest, start light and build the peaks around the 4/5 song cause thats how I mix at home, but when I play out thats not usually the way it gets to go.
Maybe if I get to play opening set one day I'll get to do it my way though!

But starting too light can be a bad thing, cause if you don't get the crowd going usually in the first 30 min. of your set. Then your gonna spend the rest of your time using songs you had planned for later, to get their attention back.

You must hear this track!

Peter Benisch - Spiralling

Beatless and yet so powerful; it was the closing track on Benisch's album but could very easily be the perfect intro to a trance set.
trancinchink
this is what i'm using as an intro track.
Scott Bond vs Solarstone - 3rd Earth WOOOOOOT!!!
