IMHO, this isn't the problem of Canadian guvernment. This is a problem of american/canadian society as a whole. I noticed a while ago that certain jokes are a taboo here.
Try telling jewish person a jewish joke, and he'll get offended.
Try telling black person a black joke, and he'll get offended.
Try telling a gay person a gay joke, and he'll get offended.
Try telling a fat person a fat joke, and he'll get offended. |

exactly, imagine a show, any show in Canada that start pulling hassidic jews in the street and start making fun of them... man, the host will be publicly executed or something along those lines :)
Its not about humour, its about some basic level decency. |

Actually it more about people with no sense of humour and the government bending over for a minority (yet again)... |

I hear Polish jokes all the time and I don't get offended.
But I think the whole issue is not that French people don't have a sense of humour but whether the jokes were funny or not. If a joke is actually funny then it doesn't matter if its geared towards a certain people. Like for example when the dog "peed" in the snow and the kid ate it, that was funny. Other things in the skit were not so funny.
We all know that we have different senses of humour and as a comedian (a good one at least), Conan should know when a joke is going to be funny and when its going to offend a bunch of people. And I personally don't think he went too far in the skit but if I was a Quebecer, I can see how some things could be taken as offensive. There is no reason tho that the Canadian gov't should be apologizing for this, Conan should if anything, or it should be just taken with a grain of salt and forgotten about. |

its really sad to read how you put the 24% of the population that built this nation as partners with the english back then.
bah anyways, its useless to argue with a bunch of stupid-square-headed ontarians... |

Come on now Malek
Most Ontarians love Quebec and French People
However go outside the Island on Montreal and you definatley cannot say the same or even talk to anyone in english or French for that matter if they know you are an Aglophone.
Keep in mind there are a-holes anywhere you go and disrespect is usually a sign of jealousy! |

I was actually refering to the whole 15 complaints that the network got from my previous post...
Besides, I've yet to meet or hear of anyone that actually took offence, Quebecois or not...
(and considering Montreal is the home of "Just for Laughs", I highly doubt those that are complaining are a 'majority')
Anyways....this arguement is getting old and moot... |

Durafei, although there is some truth to your point, it's not entirely true. Any one of these or other minorities who are confident in themselves and their place in our society need not and do not necessarily get offended. I have told gay jokes to gay people who found them funny, and in fact I've heard the best ones from them to begin with. I have told black jokes in front of black friends and the only people who were offended were the white people who were worried about looking racist, the black friend laughed her ass off. I have heard Iranian jokes (told by non-Iranians and Iranians) and if they were funny, I laughed my ass off. If not, I didn't laugh, but was not offended.
The point is that comedy has to be on edge to be truly funny, and by definition that will mean that some will love it, some will not find it funny, and some will be offended. And who will be in which group depends on the type of comedy. If you watch a show like Conan's you have by default consented to hear potentially offensive statements and have agreed to not be offended because the show is called a COMEDY show.
Now, the issue of native american\canadian jokes is slightly different because in my opinion that are the only group that have not yet received a fair shake in our society. Thus, if a joke was directed at say, the poverty in native reserves, there would be nothing funny about it.
By the way, I'm surprised people haven't commented that the real subject of the dog's jokes was the arrogance and ignorance of Americans! Conan was really laughing at himself for god's sake! Good for him for being able to do that, and all the rest of us should be able to do so too. |

| that is pretty funny, but u cant really expect the gov't. to let it go without saying anything, that was at time pretty harsh. |

dude, this wasn't broadcasted in quebec, actually no one i know even follows conan.
so no one really was shocked on the spot and vented his frustration to the channel.
i still repeat, this isn't about laughs, quebecois have a good sense of humour, but these jokes were degrading and tasteless... and moreover cheered by our neighbours the torontians... |
