It was awarded the Australian University of The Year for the last three years :p :p It is a good university.

Wollongong is a city about 1 hours drive south of Sydney. It has lots of nice beaches, some nice pubs and i think one or two nightclubs. If you are really into the nightlife, then staying in Sydney would be a much better option. Wollongong is much smaller than Sydney....Wollongong still has parties at the university every week though i think. It is nice, but if you are a real TA there isn't really much going on down there. I don't know of any trance events running in Wollongong.

Sydney is where all the action is! Go to the University Of Sydney, right in the middle of the city!

hello people,
I'm from Toronto, and with every passing day up here, it seems more and more likely that I'll be staying in your fine country for at least 4 months probably starting in april. Since 4 months is far too long to go without music, I was hoping you guys could fill me in on some details which I noticed weren't addressed yet in this thread.
Since I am probably gonna be starting out in Melbourne [but probably won't be exclusively held to] any information about the east coast of australia would be extremely helpful.

1. Clubs. I'm wondering about the house music scene in Australia. But not the horn blazing, laser shooting phasor sounding music most crappy clubs try to pass off as house. I'm talking the dirty, funky, filthy beats like satoshi tomiie, danny tenaglia, steve lawler, or the scumfrog play. I've been spoiled in toronto recently with a massive influx of great underground house talent, but I'd hate to go at least 4 months without getting my party on. Are there any good clubs exclusively playing good house music? Or are there any good house music nights anywhere? How do you guys do for attracting the international house talent?

2. Record Shops. Since there is no possible way I can go 4 months without my tech 12's, I was also wondering about good record shops. Ones that would sell the above said house music, and if there aren't any, I sure as hell hope that your drink prices are cheap to help me offset 'the world's largest shipping charge' I'll be paying on importing vinyls.

3. Not EDM related, but when do your terms start for university? I'm also thinking about taking a couple engineering courses down there, just to get ahead of myself a little bit in my degree.

Thanking you in advance

Really great thread! :)

Seems like Melbourne and Sydney are the best places when it comes to trance. But there's some small hope even in the cities on the east coast, if i'm getting you right?
I'm coming to Aussie in february, to Sydney, to backpack around the east coast (like everybody else heh). In what cities is it most likely to find some tranceparties?

Even if you say that your trancescene is small, for me already the three mentioned clubs in Sydney (or that might have been in the clubs in Sydney-thread) are stunning. In Sweden we hardly have a scene big enough for any trance at a regular basis - exception Stockholm. Not that there aren't trance events, but they are quite few and it's almost always the same peeps travelling from city to city :)

Well anyway... this makes me wonder what they actually do say about Swedes? ;)

>Q: Is it safe to run around in the bushes in Australia? Thanks from >Sweden!
>A: So its true what they say about Swedes.

Sly Guy: All forms of house are huge in Sydney. It's easy to find catered clubs to your styles of house, as well as record shops to sell you the wax. [I can't comment on Melbourne, but would think it'd be pretty good also]

Scintilla: The east coast is where Sydney and Melbourne are.....that's where the Trance Scene is :P The West Coast does have smaller nights here and there, but it's a fair bit rarer....In Summer keep reading here and I'm sure you'll find a party on @ the very worst once a month in each city(that's uplifting trance, the hardtrance/hardstyle is weekly in 2 venues in Sydney; Plastic and Sublime@Home).

The Austrlian bush, like anything in isn't too dangerous if you keep your wits about you (there ARE snakes and spiders out in the rural areas.) If you want to check out the bush check out http://www.atn.com.au/parks/parks.htm for more information on all of Austrlia's Parks and beaches.

What do we think of Swedes? I think it's safe to say we all like them down here :) (We like anything from Europe :P)

Thanks for the answer :)

Sounds great, I'll keep an eye out during the summer (winter for me, he :) ) to see what parties might pop up... :)

Well actually I've only heard good things about australians too, so then we all like each other, how great ;)

The uni semester starts early March.
I'm an engineering student, and the best university for engineering are:
For Melbourne, Monash Uni (where I am ;) )
RMIT also has a solid engineering Program (that's the Royal Melboure Insitiute of Technology)

For Sydney:
University of NSW (not sure exacly where it is, but its the best in Australia (only just)

Not sure what else there is up in Sydney.

Do you have any idea what the streams of engineering offered are?
Currently I'm taking engineering physics, because I enjoy my own pain, and basically it's a rediculous program involving robotic, photonic, nuclear, electrical and computer engineering all in one. Do you know of any programs of engineering down there similar to that? Secondly, when does the second semester for your university start? Thx, I'll try to stop asking questions.
G`Dave
Second semester varies by one or two weeks depending on how much holiday the uni gives. but its generally around mid to late July.

I don't know of many engineering programs like that, I can only really speak for Monash uni, its the only one I really know, but undergrad degrees foucus on civil, electrical, mechanical, mechatronics, industrial, telecommunications, computer systems.

There are post grad degrees that offer much more specific areas of study, might be worth looking into those.

Top Uni's in Aus (within top 500 in the world):

1. Australian National University
2. University of Melbourne
3. University of Queensland
3. University of Sydney
3. University of New South Wales
3. University of Western Australia
7. Monash University
7. University of Adelaide
9. Macquarie University

12. Flinders University of South Australia
12. La Trobe University
12. Murdoch University

ANU is 53 in the world, Melbourne ranks at 82 the rest are grouped in 100's.

These Universities suck (not in top 500):

Australian Catholic University
Australian Maritime College
Avondale College
Central Queensland University
Charles Sturt University
Christian Heritage College
Curtin University of Technology
Deakin University
Edith Cowan University
Griffith University
Northern Territory University
Queensland University of Technology
RMIT
Southern Cross University
Swinburne University of Technology

rankings arent always right, imo, the only Universities worth going to are the ones that carry out research. All the Australian ones that do this are in the top group, all others I equivilant to TAFE.

its not so much what your degree is, but where u got it from that counts.
