| Im just wondering why there arent more available?? Aria in Montreal seems to be having a lot of their sets recorded (Malek), and i would LOVE to see it being done more in Toronto. I cant see why this wouldnt be a bonus for both the club and the dj for promotional purposes, they could even profit from it. Imagine walking into System a week after the best set youve heard all year, and being able to purchase it at the coat check for ten bucks. Id be all over it. |

i believe u gotta pay for the right to the DJ and it's usually quite expensive ..
i recall some drum and bass DJ's would charge liscensing fees upwards to a couple of thousands just for a 2-3 hr set.. moreoever, some DJ's might not want to have it recorded under any circumstances at all ..

incase they totally screw up the nite and don't want a bad rep from it or there are unfinished/unreleased tracks included in the set that hav execlusive rights to be played by the DJ. |

i'm sure Malek has approached a lot of DJ's who have spun at Aria if they didn't mind being recorded, but i doubt that every one was more than willing ..

| I asked Armin, and he was willing but his manager flatly refused! |

well recording a set is something, but selling it, thats something else and it becomes so much harder.
Also, I did not really record lots of sets, actually I just started.
Armin Van Buuren in oct: absolute sound quality. never ever been released.
Guy Ornadel in dec: I recorded without asking, and without wanting to make too much noise around it... no problems, later on, even Ornadel himself put it on his website.
Mauro Picotto in Jan: his manager saw me at the last second with the equip and he said "I saw nothing, carry on" :D The quality was ok, it was a really popular download (bringing my server to its knees many times).
Josh Gabriel in feb: did the same as ornadel and picotto, released it but it got ugly and removed the set right away. Dresden didn't want it to be online for many reasons (I'll spare you the details), Gabriel was against but was resigned to it happening. The set is now offline.
Desyn Masiello this saturday: Really cool guy, we were chatting then I told him that if he would like his set be recorded and he said "YES!! and I want a copy!"... later on, to be sure, I showed him my website and asked him if he didn't mind having it on the net and he said that there was absolutey no problem.
So it all depends on the dj and the situation. For example I could not see myself asking Sasha for a recording hehehe... while cool djs like Desyn are more accessible and friendly. Also, using a microphone picking up some crowd noises could reduce the damage if a dj bitches later about it. |

Thats funny you mention Sasha. His set @ Labour of Love (Guvernment) is the only set i have from the Guv, aside from an Oliver set. My original thought with this post i guess, is that the club should be prepared with recording equipment just in case the dj is open minded about a recording. And as far as selling copies, i think with rotating resident dj's it would be a great idea. |

maybe because he did record it himself... when a dj wants to record it he brings his own equipment or the club has its own.
residents djs thats another thing, at aria from time to time, the club gives cds of resident djs for free. |

| i suppose if he records all his own sets it pretty much prevents the club recording it as there's usually only one REC out on mixers! |

Actually the Mary J Blige (sp) remikx that got huge the past year or so was orignally a Luke Fair remix, but some plucked it out of a recorded set he did, re-mixed essentially identical to the way he did, pressed it and released it, screwing him outta $$$$. |

Same sort of thing as file sharing...people make a sound file of a record they bought, then put it on the internet for people to make and play CDs with. |
