getting rights to music

Hey all,

I am currently working for a very small video production company and we are currently putting together our first documentary DVD film to be released in various stores across the US. I was put in charge of getting rights to be able to use selected electronic music tracks. I have one question, and that is how would I go about (if necessary) gaining consent from the artist on using his/her track in the video? Are copyrights required to host certain tracks/livesets on this website, and if so, how were those rights obtained? If anyone could provide some assistance I would be VERY appreciative, thanks!

cheers,
Tyler

contact the artist's management and/or record labels?
Freak
You need to contact the artists publisher- they will then licence is to you (or tell you to feck off).
You may be lucky and not have to pay, or they may charge you
Floorfiller
usually on an artists website they have in the contacts section a person to get in touch with about licensing...;)

getting rights to music..
hmm...
lots and lots of paperwork. Your production company should have all the papers needed, if not, consult the big red book or check out Gorilla by jungle software, they have tons of forms too.

that depends on the label.
lesser known labels will probably charge less $$ because it raises publicity, meanwhile big labels dont care.
also when it comes to Video Productions, the whales tend to not care if your on a shoestring budget or not, they will ask for money (at least in my experiance).

That sucks, what types of labels are you calling? I am talking about labels like Warner Bros, Sony Music Entertainment, Nettwerk, the big ones. They probably won't care that I am working for a shoe string company will they? :(

Prolly not :(
best bet is to stick to indie/underground stuff, as the music is usually better and MUCH cheaper.
I once asked about getting "brown eyed girl" for a film I will shoot in the future... sheesh forget about it.
