I watched this doc last night and it freaked me out how these Corporations have the same rights as a human. This ideal came from the United States and spread like wild fire across the whole world.
Cant wait for part two
F.Y.I. the next part is on March 3, 10pm on TVO |

Yeah, that makes sense. It wasn't a computer since computers didn't really exist.
But Dr.Z do you think it would have been right for IBM to provide any sort of service to the Holocaust. "Trying to get some cash" and killing 6 million people are two different extremes. |
Well it was a "computer" at the time (for skipper as well), you can't compare modern day computers to the ones they had long time ago.
In any case, do I think it was 'right' ? Probably not. Does it really matter what I think? NO!
IBM is a huge corporation, and they can do whatever they wish to gain money, even if it helping the enemy. Coca Cola did the same thing. They invented Fanta so it could be sold in Germany during the second world war and they can still earn the profits. Since corporations have the same freedom as individual humans do, they can do pretty much anything. |

The problem is that they have too much freedom and they abuse that freedom. If a "Corporation, is looked upon as individuals, it fits all the characteristics of psychopath." Corporations have complete disregard for human life and for environment. They are only focused on making profit at any cost. Corporate philosophy about the pursuit of profit at any cost, in order to satisfy the share holders, sickens me! |

Keep in mind that the film is extremlely biased. It wouldn't have been nearly as effective if they detailed the GOOD things that corporations are doing.
I agree, though, that the level of influence that organizations have over government and individuals is alarming. Did you know that there is a documentary out there about a man who ate ONLY McDonalds for one month? The quick decline of his health, which is the focus of the film, is appalling - all because of McD's.
Think that any major film carrier will bring it to theatres? Nope... |

Of corse there did. They talked about eliminating poverty in third world countries, and stabilizing the North American market dominance.
I was impressed they had interviewed Noam Chomsky. In a good way. |

If you feel that the movie is biased, it’s your perspective and we should not argue about this here, because it’s pointless and it has nothing to do with what I’m trying to say here. I thought that the point of the movie was not whether it was biased or not, but that we should all be aware what kind of influence such institutions have on our everyday lives. So yeah, it doesn’t matter that it’s biased, the only thing that matters is that it opens people’s eye to what is going on in this world. I mean if you were to praise corporations and all the great things that they do for our everyday life do you think anyone would give a damn about what this film is trying to say?
Another point that this film is trying to get across is that it's up to us to do something about our environment, etc. That is, we should be the ones to take an initiative and do something about these things. The problem is that everyone out there is so busy with their own lives that they forget about the simple things that life has to offer. We are not perfect and we use the simple philosophy “that out of sight is out mind”. Unfortunately, this doesn’t stop reality, and in 20-30 years from you’ll see what we turn our planet into. Our children will have a very sad and grim future ahead of them.
As for your point about McDonalds, all I have to say that a person should be educated enough to know that obviously the food there is very extremely unhealthy. So again, that documentary will get the point across to the people that go there everyday. Think about it. If you eat fruits and vegetables for 1 month will you get sick? No! Now if you eat at McDonalds for a month you’ll most likely get stomach ulcer.
I find that the point of all these documentaries is not that there are biased or not, but that they get the point across. “The Corporation” got the point across. |

I never argued that the movie didn't get the point across. Of course it did.
But you have to see it for what it is when you're watching it. If you come out of the theatre thinking "consumerism is bad! I'm never shopping at Gap again, or driving my car again!" then the people who made the film are just as bad as the corporations, taking advantage of those who don't think think their actions through before doing.
I think discussions like this are not pointless - would you rather that this board be saturated with event postings and picture threads and void of intelligent discussion?
With respect to McDonalds - the point of the movie is to prove how damaging that food is to your body. McDonalds doesn't put labels on happy meals like Phillip Morris does with cigarettes - "McDonalds is the leading cause of gastrointestinal problems" - it passes its product off as a "meal." It does not disclose EXACTLY how harmful its product is to the public. There has never been a STUDY of how McDonalds food affects the body of prolonged periods of time, like there has been with smoking. Considering the rate of McD's consumption in America, don't you think the results of such a study would be useful? |

You also have to understand that McDonald's feeds millions of people around the world DAILY. If the food was "unhealthy" the corporation would have been out of business 30 years ago.
The point is that the food is not "unhealthy", the food is perfectly fine. The only difference is that it contains alot of calories. Its like changing your diet from meats to say... all asian food. Your body physique will change. Same thing if you change your diet to all McDonald's, your body physique will change (ie fat). Now, say you get liver cancer, its just the cause of the diet, such as enfeeblement from other diets that 'lack' calories. |

I think the fact that they are not out and never will be is due to advertising. Also the human mind is too suitable to garbage that it receives from television. People see McDonalds and they want to go there because they don't realize that there are other better alternatives. For instance how about spending 5 minutes of your time and making a healthy sandwich. I didn't see a single advertisement on television that would tell the consumers that this is a cheaper and a better alternative than McDonalds.

Umm... Not unhealthy... How would you define healthy food? For me healthy food = "you eat a lot of that kind of food without getting sick". Unfortunately, I don't see how you can eat a lot McDonalds burgers without having any stomach problems or obesity problems. Hence, by my definition McDonalds is unhealthy. Maybe I'm defining something wrong here, and you may want to shed some light on this for me. |
