Disturbing Data
A broken computer has led to the arrest of a Boy Scout leader on charges of possessing and making child pornography.
The case began last week, when a man brought his home computer into a Scarborough store to have it repaired. But while staff were trying to fix what ailed the machine, they found disturbing images on it, and called police.
Authorities quickly obtained a search warrant and seized two computers and a cache of pictures at Ian Mole’s home. They became even more alarmed when they learned the 20-year-old is a Boy Scout leader with the 948 Bendale Troop in Scarborough, and volunteered at a camp called Adventureland in Aurora from 1997-2002.
“There is no indication at this time that that there has been any assault or any type of inappropriate behaviour against anybody in the scout troop,” reveals Det. Sgt. Paul Gillespie. But police now will begin intense interview sessions with the families and the youngsters whom Mole led to find out what – if anything – happened.
For now, detectives are still assessing the evidence. “It was a massive amount … and it’s going to take us a couple of weeks to get a true number, but I would say [it] was in the tens of thousands of pictures and movies … very evil, and despicable images."
Mole appeared in an Old City Hall courtroom Thursday and was remanded in custody. Police are urging any parents who think their child may have had contact with the accused to call the Sex Crimes Unit at (416) 808-7267.
Police say Mole has been involved in scouting since his childhood. Authorities have called a special private meeting for next Monday, where parents and other affected parties can discuss the bust.
Police stats show almost 50 percent of all those involved with child porn images also wind up sexually abusing children.

Well, I'm not denying that anyone who has tens of thousands of child porn images is obviously a sicko... but...
Is nobody disturbed by the fact that this repair shop was peeking into his data, and that he's been branded as a sex criminal without any proof? Okay, if he's really molested anyone then let him rot... but if it's just images on a computer then no matter how sick they are, he hasn't committed a crime! Although if the article is true (I take these things with a grain of salt) and they actually suspect he MADE some of it, then that changes everything.
This is disturbing in more ways than one, I think. I mean most guys with a computer have SOME kind of porn on it, not child porn obviously, but I don't want ing store workers looking at my stuff... it's none of their business! If they're doing that, couldn't they also be going through other people's computers and harvesting mailing addresses and credit card numbers and ??
Bothered. |

^^^^ I completly agree.
I am definatly concerned that some of the boy scouts were involved somehow. If he has that much child porn on there, and easy access to young boys, it is very possible that he had other intentions, other than just looking at pictures. I do hope that the boy scouts were not harmed.
On the computer store note: i could completly see the mentality of the repair guys, "hehe, lets see what this guy has on his computer, maybe he has porn!" we've all done it to our friends, just messing around, but these people have a job to do, and its to FIX the computer, NOT look through a customers personal files:whip::whip:
there is no way that the pics could have been in the same place as important system files! so you know there were intentionally looking for stuff
thank god i do all my computer repairs myself! |

damn, that's messed up...
and about the computer store thing... there's been so many comp's i've fixed where i've had to go into c:\program files\whatever and notice a directory called "pr0n" . just sitting on c: . so funny. this one dude had practically all of jenna jameson's stuff... and this was a business computer! on a network!:eek: and there were links to other comps on the network with more pr0n!:eek::toothless i was laughing so hard. at least try to hide it, lol
but you don't go searching for that stuff, that's wrong. invasion of privacy. i just can't beleive how many people keep it out in the open, let alone leave it there when bringing it in to get serviced :p |

Agrees with DigiNut.
The fact that there are child porn pictures is in itself disturbing. However, it's not fair to automatically equate the possession of child porn with a violent, child raper.
They had no business going through his stuff in the first place. In fact, the guy may even have some sort of law on his side ... invasion of privacy or something? |

that...it's a sickness. i find it VERY hard to believe that someone who is interested in child porn would not jump at the opportunity. |

Possession and transfer of child pornography is a crime, all around the world, EOD. That's the bottom line.
Yeah, it sucks that maybe people go thru your computer files when it's in the shop, but I'm glad they did, in this instance. |

that's a ridiculous and dangerous comment to make...so we're going to start crucifying people for what they THINK? Um...that's frightening.
Possession of child porn is a crime...but there are privacy laws too. I agree that I wouldn't want someone with an interest in child porn to be a scout leader...but I have a hard time stomaching that he's facing charges because someone else has arguably invaded his privacy. Fixing someone's computer does not necessarily give them the right to examine the HD's contents. |

People have been busted for crimes because they thought it would be a good idea to take pictures of a crime in action (pot grow operations, gang rape of drugged minors, etc...) then drop them off at a 1-hr photo lab. Are photo technicians not supposed to check the images for color quality too?
I call it 'thinning of the herd'. |
