I think most of the people here are more than willing to help newbies, just not when it's answering the same question 10 times a week that's already covered in a humongous sticky at the top of the page.
Believe me, if someone posted something to the effect of "I've read the stickies at the top but still have a few questions" there would be a dozen people ready to help him with further info. |

i think this section of forum is beeing a bit abused by new comers...
they see it as a royal way to learn everything fast and easy, but if you are really devoted and wanne produce, you should find the info your self, or seek some contacts...
this section is IMO for people who are already producing new or old don't matter..
for all we know we reply big replies with full of information, these persons go download a demo, and find it and then forget about producing..bit wasting of our time right? so there for a sticky post.. |

Ibiza Dreams, do you know how many times we continue to give advice to people that refuse to read the Newbie sticky? More than we should. Most of us are nice and are eager to lend a helping hand, but us recommending the same programs and soundcards over and over again is A.) Annoying and B.) Inefficent.
We were all beginners at some point and that's why the sticky was made. We want to help. I take offense to what you said. |
Do you not think the newbie takes offense to posts like
"READ THE ING STICKIES" or "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD," along with all the other flame-intended posts that drive people away from here. So in the end, it really doesn't matter who offends who. Another problem bro, who said it is YOUR job to give advice to newbies? Did someone put you in charge of that job? Or do you just feel it's your responsibility? It's actually neither. You respond to posts if you want to, period. Posts like this newb's post shouldn't bother anyone, are they disturbing your almighty production forum? Is it yours? Then why bother.
| quote: | | Originally posted by Etherium This is highly ineffecient way to spend one's time. |
And who's making you spend your time answering questions? Why complain about something you can change... learn to sew or play an instrument. The complaining of you people is pathetic, a newbie asking for help is as far from pathetic as you can get. There are too many "nonstated" rules... like: read the stickies, post in exactly the right forum, use the "search" for everything before posting, ask the right questions, etc... if they are rules and people break them, then complain, but if not, deal with it.
Another thing that is inefficient is that horrible "Newbie Sticky." It provides little to no information whatsoever to a person that has no idea about producing at all but wants to get into it.
A quote from that AWESOME "Sticky":
| quote: | Sonar 3
A full featured midi sequencer (the best for midi imo) which also is a multitrack audio/looping studio. Compatible with VST and DX plugins and supports plug in automation. One of the oldest squencers and was originally called Cakewalk when it was first introduced in the mid 80's. Alternatives include Emagic Logic and Steinberg's Cubase. |
Now if I am COMPLETELY new to producing... what in the is this supposed to clear up for me? What the hell is a "midi sequencer" a "VST and DX plugin," oh and the best piece of information that tells a newbie everything "first introduced in the mid-80's." Informative and extremely comprehensive right? How does a newbie know which program is good and which isn't? Because one supports "this and that" acronym? That sticky is horrible to start off with dude. All the other "program" explanations are along the same lines, none explain what a sequencer is, what a softsynth is, exactly the components required to get started, etc... that is the information that needs to be up there. Until then, don't expect a sticky like that will get newbies anywhere.

That is your opinion but I think it's ridiculuous. What's the point of forums and sharing information? To learn things, hopefully as fast and easily as possible. Why discuss music or teach people? Why not let them just do everything and learn everything on their own? If they do it on their own, what's the use of the forums. If Swamper wants, divide the production forum into "Beginner" and "Advanced" sections, but until then, we can't complain of beginners or advanced people.
At least reply by saying, "check out the sticky at the top, if it's not there, post and clarify your question."

To the rest of you: The stickies are good, but they are not the sum of all wisdom. And their format, as just message board threads, does not make for the most convenient way to find things, because of the need to skim through huge signatures, BS posts that really shouldnt be there, and trying to find stuff despite all the dead links in some of the older posts.
What we need is a place to collect only the quality information in a user-friendly reference context. Another forum I saw (not about EDM, though) had a means for users to add lessons pages, or articles, whatever you want to call them. These were web pages accessible through the main site that contained tutorials, etc. They were categorized and searchable. I hope that something like this is part of the upcoming massive upgrade. |
Now THIS is positive and constructive criticism.

| You're absolutely right Ibiza. Next time someone asks a newbie question, I'm going to write a six page essay on what programs he should use. Then I'm going to send him four-hundred dollars to buy all of the VSTs. I apologize for being insensitive and in the future if there is anything all of us here at Trancaddict can do to make you feel more righteous, let us know. |

Agreed.
ID, I've learned just about everything possible short of raw midi code regarding the techincal aspects of producing from just reading, and afaik I haven't posted a thread yet asking for help.. I've done the etherium approach, read every in post in this forum, future producers and tons of sites with tutoralals, manuals, etc.
The 14 year olds who haven't used a forum before post a thread such as this asking for help for 2 reasons, they are stupid, or lazy. Things are all layed out for them in a sticky thread already, there is no reason they should EXPECT people to tell them answers suited to their exact need.
How are they to learn the terminology? Watch this: http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=sequencer&r=67
Google owns all.

Yeah, the sticky isn't going to teach you how to ing produce and tell you what the best program for you is necessarily, because no one here is going to be able to tell you anything other than what's in that sticky if you're a complete newbie. In this case bucko didn't read it at all, or use the Search function. Seriously man, if you're so concerned about how newbies to this forum are being mistreated then why don't you respond with great depth to every single "hi tell me what software and instruments I should get to produce great songs" threads out there. If you stick around here for longer you'll see that this is asked 3 times a week, hence the sticky. As I mentioned before, if someone posts "Hey I'm new to this, I read the stickies and a few threads, and I have some other questions that weren't answered", then I guarantee they will be helped. |

I never said advanced and beginners should get their own section..
i said people who are devoted to learn to produce or are producing, should be asking quesitons here, and not people that know about produciing, that you got to learn your self..
if you want to know which software/hardware, go google, and type that, seek and learn.
i don't remember asking alot on this section, i only started to ask, when i went real serious in this producing thing..
Let me sum it up for you
I DO NOT MIND if a new comer comes asking "hey i am using Fruityloops, but i don't know how to automate this...i willing to answer such questions..
but coming to say HOW DO I PRODUCE? sorry learn that your self. |

Ibiza Dreams: if you now think the thread suck's so damn much and don't think there is enough information... WTF don't you fix the information and add something yourself.
the thread isn't really old.. there is still information added to it.. it is faaaaar from perfect and it will never be perfect.. but stop whining about the thread and write what a sequencer is instead |

My picks:
Logic Audio, get it here
-or-
Cubase SX, get it here
Don't bother with any else :-)

| everyone is flaming about using the forum to find the info you want.. I didn't even know about this forum until I was producing for nearly four years! Nearly EVERYTHING that I know, with the exception of EQing (thank you TA :) ) I learned through experimentation.. what's happened to the good ol' days? |
