Quite seriously, the replacing letters with numbers and punctuation was around long before the internet. It was originally used on hacking/cracking/phreaking bulletin boards, they would discuss their illegal and nefarious activities in 1337-5p34k to avoid the attention of government officials (!). Seriously.
I've read this from a few different sources, so I don't really doubt that it's true. |

Actually, bulletin boards (BBS'es) existed before the "mainstream" internet became popular. Gawd, I remember downloading one lousy pr0n picture for 1.5 hours (200KB size) - and that was over 2400bps modem (that's 2400 bits per second, which translates to .3K per second - in a perfect scenario). Anywho, bbs'es were like each individual web pages are nowdays, but you had to dial a separate phone number for each and had to have a login/pwd to get into most. Plus, a lot were paid bbs'es. Oh, and to top it all off you were probably running Win3.1 and DOS-based terminal emulator. Zmodem, Kermit anyone? I still have Telix somewhere on a floppy.
THE HORROR, THE HORROR!:nervous: :nervous:
/l33t Mode: ON:toocool:
BTW, I'll never forget the song by N'Trance with lyrics "I've got a phat PC with a 14.4 modem" BUWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! |

Yup... smth like that... keep in mind that www (as we know it) technology was developed in early 90's but it was based on a well-known concept of hyperlinking (see any help file circa DOS 5.0 or any *NIX variant before)

Person registers at newsgroup/forum A. Person claims to be female. Regulars don't believe her. An argument ensues, which is finally put to rest by "pics or stfu."
My guess anyways, I can't really see it as being a part of anything earlier than the late 90s because of how much more expensive (and technical know-how was needed) it was to get pics into a computer from mid-90s or earlier.
And I can't really see it as being ingrained into the gamer culture, posting pics in a game is not an option offered by most games. |
