Those things really aren't TA-specific, it's more internet dork lingo in general.
This belongs in the Chillout room ;) |

| 1337 is nothing more than gamer lingo that's spread to the mainstream for the most part. Much like "owned (or pwned)", "h4x0r3d", "j00" and a personal favorite..."n00b".;) |

This is something I just don't get. Can someone please enlighten me as to why 'owned' becomes 'pwned' in 1337 5p34k? |

its not leetspeak, basically the o and p are right beside each other on the keyboard, so sometimes it gets mispelled, then caught on like crazy, so ppl spell it with p...:D |

The ones in place of exclamation points came about in online gaming...usually there's not much time to type, so in your excitement you'd type something like this:
"THEyre cming in the side door!!!!111"
sometimes people modify it to this:
!!!!1111one
Which is just a further mutation of the above, only it adds a mocking element.

The so-called "1337-5p34k" has been around long before Warcraft 3, in fact I remember it being around as early as Ultima Online, although it was around even before then as cracker lingo before it moved into mainstream online gaming and 12-year-old AOL abusers. |

Although your explanation is correct, it actaully is a part of 1337-5p34k. Not that it originated with leet, but it has become ingrained into that culture. |

you are all wrong, as a cs player I've played since beta 2 and watch newbies use noob speak for years
i think it started in Quake1 and 2 people started using h4x and other noobspeak, it started REALLY getting mainstream during counterstrike beta 5, that's when JeffK was at his prime as well, it pretty much all came from him read www.somethingawful.com/jeffk, during beta5 it was cool to say stuff like "y helo thar" and "kthx"
edit:"leetspeak" like th15 was first used during BBS days where people had crappy modems and they wanted to avoid filters so they talked with part numbers |
