| well i like Max Graham (Transport 4)and DJ Tiesto's (Revolution) progressive records that they play. But i bought Bedrock mixed by Jimmy Van M and I thought the cd ing sucked ass!!! |

I usually end all my sets (no matter what they are) with a progressive tune... its a great wind-down genre, and great chillin' music.
i wouldn't vote it as the best floorfiller, but definitely got something going on here :D :D

The new genre of "Progressive" is a combination of Progressive House and deeper slower Progressive Trance. Epic/Uplifting Trance is STILL considered Progressive Trance, it's just the opposite end of the spectrum. At least that's the impression I've have.
Hmmm.... Everyone seems to forget about Progressive HOUSE, they THINK it's trance (slow boring trance), but really it's usually Progressive HOUSE. At least that's what most of what Digweed spins is considered, for instance.

| well..do I like progressive? depends on what I want to do. HH, epic and Nu NRG I can dance to...Prog, I cant, but when im chilling, prog is EXACTLY what I want to listen to!! |

Aight .. to me, progressive can fit good on the beggining of a set, but played after 2-3 hours .. will totally get people on to sleep, then getting onto the 12 AM , epic/upliftinc and hard trance is what its all about .
I dont know, it may be me, or my local area, buuut, lately, I been hearing those 99 uplifting trance tracks been played once again, after the 1-2 year retirement of the tracks, now Im hearing them again ... I dont know if its just me, or its really happening. I've also read that trance is still big, bigger then HH in the UK, no matter what everyone says, and Sasha Playing Xpander on the Summer Sound System this yr.. was 1 of the tunes that caused Chaos .. so .. I dont know. Uplifting and Epic trance will always be my favorite, andhopefully better stuff from it will come out, there's also some good Progressive Uplifting trance .. Planisphere - Monnshine Part B is perfect example . So .. like I said, fits good on just the begginings , but no more then 2 hrs, cause then it will drop. |

I made a pretty long definition of progressive music a while back, dunno if anyone wants to dig it out, but I can't be arsed to try defining it again......
Um, personally I love the stuff. It covers such a large range of music, but it's all based on the same principle of minimilisation and a rebellion away from the less subtle genres of uplifting trance and hard house, which have, so far as I'm concerned, got very old, very fast. Progressive is what trance is evolving to (slowly), which may not be a reality that some of you like, but the only way that trance is going to survive is to keep on evolving. Most people are already weary of that uplifting, high-energy trance that dominated the clubs of 98/99, because the scene became too polluted by commercialism and unoriginality, and grew stale. Progressive is the natural step away from these genres which have already had their time in the spot-light, and towards a more subtle, underground sound of "intelligent" prog music.
For those of you who find it boring? Well, I guess there's not much I can do to change your mind if that's how you feel, but try going to a club and listening to a decent dj play it. It is absolutely perfect to dance to: dominant beat and it never lets up. You can just keep on dancing away in a "trance" because it just keeps on building, where as with contemporary trance it's usually a very stop-start affair because of the build-ups.
Anyway, just my opinion. Each to their own I guess. :) |

Okay, I dug up my definition of progressive myself:
First post:
Well I think that the term progressive refers more to the nature of the genre, rather than the actual musical aspects of it. That is, the music has progressed beyond trance and house, it is the future of music, the direction in which music is heading, it is more progressive in the everyday sense of the word than all the other genres of music.
Besides that, I could argue that the music does sound as though it's progressing somewhere anyway. Listen to a beat from a true progressive track: it always sounds like it's going somewhere, it sounds relentless. Same with the music in general actually - it just keeps on going and going, building and building, even if it doesn't peak or trough like in most other genres of music it's still got a definate direction (even though some would argue that it's flat and constant, I think that even though it is subtle, the track is always building and has definate "progression").
And that's what makes progressive so captivating to me. The fact that it just keeps on coming (way-hey) and doesn't let down. I've said it before and I'll say it again, but you have to learn how to detect all this because it's a very subtle form of music, but, at the same time, that's what makes it so satisfying to listen to.
Anyway, I've gone way off track as usual. Hope I've answered your question?

Oh yeah, one more thing.
If "progressive" simply meant that the music "progressed" and had a logical sequence from beginning to end, then you could throw just about any song ever written into this category.
Thus, even though I am unaware of where the term came from, I can only assume that progressive originated not from describing what the music was doing (i.e. progressing from beginning to end with logical succession) but describing the direction that this specific genre of music was taking culturally (i.e. it was progressing beyond all other genres of electronic music).
Feel free to tell me if you think I'm talking cod-, but this is just what I understand progressive music to be. |
