Here we go again. I'll repeat my thing on it from a few months ago:
Alright,
Having been into Prog House for an eternity, here's the score:
'Progressive' started with 'Progressive House'. Prog House started in the early / mid-90s as:
1. Being a 'progression' from the vocal / deep house that existed before then, with less vocals, often none at all
2. Being high energy, uplifting (like all house music was at the time).
3. Having some similarities to prog rock, from the early 80s (also, moving, uplifting, and progressing to a point)
They both meant the same thing to people then and Sasha + Digweed, Paul Oakenfold, and BT played similar sets, believe it or not.
Examples (Played by Oakie, Sasha, Digweed and BT):
Billy Ray Martin - Put Your Lovin Arms (1994) [Vocals]
BT - Loving You More (1995) [Vocals + Uplifting Synths]
Sasha and Maria - Be As One (1995) [Vocals + Uplifting Synths]
Grace - Not Over Yet (1995) [Vocals + Uplifting Synths]
Libra Presents Taylor - Anomaly (Calling Your Name) (1995) [Vocals + Uplifing Synths]
Faithless - Salva Mea (1995) [Vocals + Uplifting Synths]
BT - Flaming June (1997) [Uplifting Synths]
Armin Van Buuren - Blue Fear (1997) [Deep Synths]
This lead to it splitting in two around 1996-97, when I really got into it. On one side was Epic Trance, on another side was Progressive House.
Binary Finary - 1998 (1997) [Epic Trance]
Paul Van Dyk - For An Angel (1997)[Epic Trance]
Deep Dish - The Future Of The Future (1998)[Progressive House]
Push - Universal Nation (1999) [Epic Trance]
Breeder - Twilo Thunder (1999) [Progressive House]
Since that, Epic Trance has become less epic, smarter and more uplifting [Tiesto's the decendent of all that], and Prog House has gotten increasiningly less uplifting and more and more minimal (or subtle, as some people would say)
Prog Trance is based on the same minimalism, just applied to trance.
Bottom line: everyone keeps on going back to the original definition of 'progressive', when its evolved to a whole new sound. That's why it's confusing.
Hope this helps. |

Im stuck right between the two,
Progressive has a lovely flow to it and i think requires a better understanding of the music and its structure. When its structired well in a set its perfect.
Epics build ups and melodys tend to wear out very quickly for me as their so dramatic, overplayed and sometimes get cheesy.
I tend to like something in the middle. |

PLEASE I BEG do NOT change this into a definition of prog thread, start a new one... i hate going thru all this crap
when im pretty sure (at least i do) i have a good grasp on what is and isnt prog. this thread is for who DOES/DOENST like it, not what it is.. thanx :D

What's wrong with Digweed's sound? He's starting to sound even more evil these days :D Old Sasha stuff rules. I think epic/uplifting is great but sometimes the intro/peak/breakdown routine gets a bit tired and stops meaning anything. That's when I like to plug in some prog and go on a little journey. |
dude im not too sure anything's wrong with his sound, but i know i dont like anything of his in the past year. unfortunate. but i loved his older EMs, and GU, so you tell me whats wrong? i dunno now i try to like it but it seems just tooooo slow.. i cant even really chill to it.. and yes, old sasha stuff rules.. "go on a little journey" are you referring to sasha @ twilo? ;) i acquired that monster set recently... "Let me take you..... on a journey.... on a journey.."
oh my goodness. that is such a monster progressive track.
i cant stop blasting that set in my car. which is weird for prog :D
id be glad to hook anyone up with this
also i would love any digweed trance set, i am sure of it... tho i dont think he will spin it ever again (cd 2 GU sydney)

just for the record, sasha and digweed IMHO are not prog trance djs, but prog house.
because there is also a lot of great progressive trance out there.. check out some of nick warren and dave seaman stuff.
i LOVE it. not so much prog house
but guys like steve gibbs (aka altitude).. pete lazonby.. trancesetters.. |

Would you consider Armin "Blue Fear" (Trouser Enthusiasts EBE Mix) as progressive or any Trouser Enthusiasts/Mekka/Monoboy/Heliotopic stuff?
BTW I love Sander Kleinenberg "Sacred"! |

i love listening to progressive house and trance when i'm at home or in my car, but when i hear it in a club it just doesn't make me wanna move at all. i need the more uplifting and banging stuff to dance to.

paul wilson... no... its just trance id say...
more progressive than tiesto of course, but still..
TE and monoboy definitely more progressive...
but i mean i feel that's like oakie style, not really under prog trance
of course i wouldnt give a rats ass if someone called it progressive
but dont say like mekka - diamondback is :D
are you feelin me yet
sander - sacred is awesome, now THATS progressive trance. (maybe even house? maybe)

you guys are going to have to listen to Patticus on this one, because he is right i'm afraid... Digweed and Sasha are progressive house, as is D:Fuse...
But what really burns my butt about this whole thread... is you guys omitted progressive TECHNO!!! My favorite kind!
(Patticus where were you on this one!? LoL....)
By the way, this is a "love it/hate it" thread!
Progressive House is what you hear in Digweed/Sasha/DFuse sets... (love it!)
Progressive Trance is what you hear in Judge Jules/Marco V & sometimes Tiesto sets... (really love it!)
Progressive Techno is what you hear in Picotto sets... (doesn't ever get any better than this!)
Uplifting Trance... well, you'd have to be an idiot if i had to explain this one to you.... (uh... well... JK, i love it!)
Cheers!

Damn i forgot "Hard Trance"....
Well, i guess this is what you will hear Picotto throw down occasionally on his more "softer" sets, and I consider a lot of Jules' Qontact set to be this....
NEways, ta ta for now!

dude i dare say you're off on the prog trance tip
judge jules is just a dance dj. hahahaha.. cheeze all the way
maybe armin is somehwat prog, id say the epitome is dave seaman tho. of progressive trance
i forgot about the techno cuz i never thought of it as prog techno, just techno!
i guess however that excludes prodigy and chem. bros..
so from now on it'll be prog techno..
progressive trance is tiesto's new set from ibiza, some of armin stuff, maybe christopher lawrence
ah - dj remy's PRODUCTIONS would be a fine example.. he spins a softer kinda progressive techno, im realizing.. (abt do you like him?)marco v's mysteryland is a good one too, nice pick there |

Judge Jules is cheese???!! On BBC1, yeah... the Ibiza Annual CD's no doubt! But his recent livesets are anything but my friend! My opinion, anyways...
