Honestly, I feel for ya.
I've had to let go of dead hard drives before, not fun! I know yours is a dead motherboard, but it's practically the same thing since you can't access your files. I've got an IBM Thinkpad at home. I don't think putting your notebook's HD would do the trick since the PC would need an OS to boot from, but who knows maybe you can try swapping your HD with another friend's notebook?
I try to back up weekly, if not daily. The problem I'm starting to realize is when I backup to DVD-R or DVD-RW sometimes the discs aren't readable across all DVD-ROMs (including the one I used to burn). Backup is such a pain, but it's one of life's necessities if you're dealing with large amounts of crap.
I've bought an external FW HD which I use solely for the purpose of copying files to it. Funny though, 80 GB for a backup isn't enough for me these days.
Just where the frick do ya live anyway? |

My PC laptop does have a Firewire card on it. I wouldn't have a FW case for your hard drive, but if you can find one I'd be willing to hook it up.
I wouldn't recommend hooking up your PC-formatted drive to a Mac since OS X doesn't handle FAT32 nor NTFS that well.

I'm not talking about accessing a hard drive over the network. I'm talking about hooking an external PC-formatted hard drive over to a Mac. From experience, hard drives formatted as NTFS don't read on the Mac when hooked up directly. Then again, the last time I tried this was with Jaguar, not Panther. I know what I'm talking about bro. |

You can't back up a motherboard.
