Its good to have fullscreen production and dont have to worry about leaving that screen for something else.

I *heart* to monitors for that one reason.

Simply to have more worksurface, so you can manage windows easier.

Have you ever tried working in a serious sequencer in one screen. Even if you don't intentionally think about it, try to count the time you spend on clicking away to find that particular edit window you need to edit some part. Try to see how much time that takes in your entire production process... You'll be amazed.

The first advancement in that area were screensets (where you can store window positions and sizes, and recall them with a simple press on a button).
Then came multi monitor support. Really it makes things MUCH easier (a common use is for example to have the arrangement page on one screen, and the mixer or the edit windows on the other). It really speeds up workflow. And in conjunction with screensets it's even better.
The first people that used dual monitor were actually video editors. Instead of having a tiny window inside their screen to see the result of their edits, they can see the video on a separate screen.

Takes up more space (but with flat panels becoming more popular, that's less of a problem) but it's really worth investing in.

Do you need specialised graphic’s cards then?

Dj Thy
Most recent cards have dual outputs (analog and DVI, which you can use with an CRT monitor with a cheap adaptor).
But even with older cards and a recent OS it's possible to use a secondary video card (PCI of course as there is only 1 AGP on consumer mobo's). But I guess it's cheaper to get a simple Nvidia or Ati Radeon.
If you want the best of the best, Matrox is the way to go though.
