On another note, the TUNE of the night:
Cohen Vs Deluxe 'Just Kick!' (Carl Cox Mix).
The story behind the track released on Carl's label Intec Records (March 1):
'Just Kick ! ' pulls together two of the biggest names in dance music. And one rapidly emerging talent. Here is how the story unfolds. Carl Cox was given a cdr of Renato Cohen's new track 'Pontapé ' whilst touring Brazil in 2002._Carl was instantly taken by its raw power.
It_became_the_finale track of his sets and the crowd reaction was so strong_that it had to be signed to his label Intec immediately.
'Pontapé' was released in September 2002 and was a real sleeper hit. Over the next year the track took on a life of it's own. With massive support from Dave Clarke, Laurent Garnier, Fergie and Pete Tong, to_name but_a few,_it has_become one of the biggest selling techno records of recent times._
Over the past year Carl has been dropping the cheeky vocal from Tim Deluxe's massive smash 'It Just Won't Do' over 'Pontape's' gnarling beats. It has been his biggest track all year and it sent the Space closing party crazy. Tim Deluxe and Darren Emerson heard Carl's mix of the two records and loved it. Now due to huge public demand we are set for an official release.
Renato Cohen was born in São Paulo , Brazil in 1974 and he has been producing since 1996. With no peer group to learn from in Sao Paulo , Renato has created his own unique sound through hard work and a love for studio equipment. Now Renato is one of Brazil 's most high profile producers and DJs. Though he's been an established name on the Brazilian club circuit for years and has released numerous records, Renato deservedly hit the international spotlight in 2002 with the enormous 'Pontapé'. record that refuses to stop.
Renato's original take on techno has always had it's own flavour and today more then ever it's a sound sought after by international DJs like Laurent Garnier, Technasia, DJ C1, Dave Clarke , Funk D'Void and Carl Cox to name a few.
The beauty of 'Just Kick ! ' is that it will transcend all genres. This is a release that a trance jock, hard house jock, house jock, techno jock and electro jock could all play and they will. The first huge release in 2004.

We apologize for this. The listing on TA was incorrect (blame this on Miami and the listing never getting adjusted). The night was always supposed to be $25 reduced before 12am. As advance tickets on www.nextticketing.com were also $25. Sorry for the miscommunication but Avalon never intended to promote false advertising.
The door price never exceeded $35 all night. This is a NYC bargain for Carl Cox, especially when you have Deep Dish or Sasha & Digweed for $50/$60.
Please don't be so indignant if they do end up raising prices for future large scale events. The demand is obviously there and if you're running a business, how else can you manage the crowd numbers...
Although of course everybody will bitch - as this is the nature of NYC clubbing.
All in all it was a great night. Carl Cox was in great spirits and Christian Smith delivered excellent sets both in the beginning at the end of the night. |
A-Girl,
What exactly is your affiliation with Avalon? I am asking since TA's have brought up other complaints on here as well, such as overcrowdedness, the heat and the sound system. The music was absolutely brilliant, but I could barely move from my spot the first couple of hours. We're talking more than just a slight inconvenience. Maybe you can relay these issues to management for us? It is greatly appreciated. |

i'm sorry but blaming it on miami for wrong price quotes? that's just wrong. look, sasha was originally advertised for 60 dollars. conveniently it gets bumped up to 75! hmm. that's a PRETTY steep price increase and done on the low if u ask me; i didn't find out about the price until i got to the avalon offices to buy my tickets. people don't like being surprised at the door, having expected to pay one price but being asked to shell out a few more bucks. sure carl cox is great and the energy is there, but that still doesn't excuse the "miscommunication". i think i have a fair gripe and a good reason to be "indignant", as you put it. i think that it's only fair for us as a clubgoer/consumer to be told everything up front and truthfully.
oh and fix those speakers. PLEASE! :wtf: |

A-girl is a part of the promotional team of my PR agency - Plexi PR.
The concerns on TA do get relayed to Avalon management. As such we've been able to address many of the issues since the opening of the club including dress code, security etc.
Of course, some issues do take longer to address than others. The new ones are duly noted.

We explained the situation, we apologized, now please give it a rest.
As for NYE, only tickets in advance were for $60. As typical for any big-club event the closer you get to the date the higher the prices. Sorry you missed the boat. I'm actually surprised you only paid $75.
In the future, if at any point you don't like something, don't buy into it. Simple!
I'll add this caveat to ALL Avalon related postings on TA. *All prices are subject to change.
If in doubt, buy your tickets in advance. You can't go wrong.

Just a thought...
It's funny: In the beginning everybody complained that the Avalon door was too discriminating and people couldn't get in. Now that there is a open policy everybody complains about the crowd. Everyody on line can look good and be well-behaved but drunk people get ugly, really fast.
NYE & Carl Cox nights (basically any big night or DJ) tend to be clubbing amateur nights. Along with the music-heads, folks who never go out, decide to make a night of it and forget exactly how much they can handle.
Enough threadjacking, let's get back to Carl Cox... |

starstuff,
Thanks for the clarification. We are appreciative of the fact that you have been bringing in all these talents over the past 6 months, and how things are improving at Avalon. I think NYTA's including myself are more satisfied now than in let's say 2002.
With regard to your comment about the crowd all I want to say is let's all not forget about the tragedies at the Station and Epitome 2. :( |

just a thought,
so if you put a lil note saying *prices are subject to change*. . .youre allowed to jack up the prices and over book the club to where ppl cant move and have a good time?
and the fact that you said: | quote: | In the future, if at any point you don't like something, don't buy into it. Simple!
|
im sorry, thats messed up and I dont care if its NYC, or the clubbing business. . . thats just ed up business mentality overall. |

u make it sound like we're trying to stir something up. we're just telling u how we feel about certain situations that've arisen at avalon but i guess having an open forum doesn't suit everyone. i LIKE avalon as a club. i DON'T LIKE, however, how certain things about it are run, and the fact that people associated with avalon have pretty much labeled the people voicing their concerns jackasses (well, not that extreme) :(
as for new year's eve... i was one of the first people to buy my tickets for that... i remember my ticket being numbered in the single digits. so u can't really say i "missed the boat" on that one either. was told 75 when i got to the office after it was being "sold" for 60$ at the nextticketing website.
buying tickets in advance? i'm sorry but sometimes my clubbing decisions are last minute, depending on how i feel from a previous night or something. so it is kinda tough to ask people to buy them in advance, especially on a week to week basis. and i'd have to agree with busy child's last point. just a few more thoughts.
i will end my piece now. |

im safe to say i will never return to avalon. . . .no dj is worth the in mess that goes on externally and internally promotion wise. Sorry to offend those who promo for avalon, but freal, not only is the place a serious health hazard, youre paying EXTRA for it at the box office. I can also say that nothing in the club really impressed me at all. . . . except carl of course.
