| well its actually the case that our current ice age is limiting the observable effects of human influenced global warming. there is a quite obvious graph ive seen of temps rising since 1950, but ice ages and greenhouse climates are actually related| |

| I thought I would chime in on this popular belief: global warming = higher sea levels.....this is untrue because whether or not ice caps melt, there is still the same amount of mass there was before hand. Its like taking ice cube in glass of water, melting it and putting it back the the same glass of water....physics and common sense tells us that the water levels will remain the same. :) |

hmm... what you are saying about the ice cube is right, but i think the polr ice caps are actually above the water? anyway, we can prove that the sea levels are rising (whether it is due to global warming or not) because there are polynesian islands that have had to be evacuted because the sea is rising above them. |

It's difficult to have a serious discussion on TA because a majority of ppl here would rather believe their own self-devised scientific theories than believe the prevailing scientific interpretation of a topic. Or someone will contradict you just to be an ass, like "global warming doesn't exist". Wow I'm really impressed by your stupidity.
So anyways Butterfly, I tried reading those articles. I couldnt get through the first one because it was crazy long. It seems the axis of the earth changes over a long period of time and it cause earth's orbit to shift form elliptical to oval and that seems to trigger ice ages. Heavy stuff, I need to let my brain cool after that one. The jist of the 2nd one was global warming melting the ice caps would stop the gulf stream for some reason and that would have a cooling effect on Europe. Although they said it wouldnt cause an ice age.
BTW, i saw an article in yahoo today, funny how things popup when you talk about them.

The sea levels should actually fall, unless theres somthing im not taking into account, as when water is frozen its volume increases by about 10% (or more the colder it is) i think. |

In either case, sea levels won't rise |

this is not true. if there is ice floating in water and it melts, the level of water shouldnt change. this is because the density of ice is less than water by about 10%. this 10% remains above the surface of the water when it is frozen but when it melts it goes below the surface of the water.
i know this is the tiest explanation of this ever, but i am on my way to lunch and a little distracted... |
