Live productions.. How are they done?

From my experience, every pro producer only DJs when doing a live show (Paul Van Dyk, Corsten, etc etc) But I've also heard that some groups can actually produce the music live (with a keyboard on stage and such)..

how come Corsten and Van Dyk don't do this?
how is it done?
How much of it is sequenced?
hey cheggy
I often get the fealing that it is all pre-organised when it comes to a lot of these performers. There is the famous picture of push without a power cable. After seeing YOMC play live, I had a look at my photos and noticed his only keyboard/controller had no midi cables connected to it.

On the other hand, there are people who do it live. I saw infected mushroom and astral projection play live and they were all up there on instruments.

Normally, I think you would have a midi sequencer/player connected to your gear to run all the instruments. Then you can play the leads or pads as you go. Others use stuff like mpc's and mc909s, so I guess there are plenty of different ways to do it.

that's a delicate question
underworld, laurent garnier and such do pretty much "live" like singing, keyboard, saxophone, efx.. while some parts are still sequenced (otherwise you'd need like 10 man)
But let's say 90% are fakes that just have to press the play button (in extreme cases like M.I.K.E. which you actually see changing the cd track, and he walks away from his jp8000 while he should be playing). I really don't know what these people are thinking, it's just pathetic and shouldn't be called a live. In most cases you can recognise them because the songs are identical as the vinyl version.

NO midi cable.Walk off when he suppose to play?:eyes: :eyes: :eyes:

Hahaha expected :D

They sequence everything and press play and most of it is to play the faders and efx. hehehe...:toothless

I asked this on Push's forum once. And he replied with something like this :

-The hard really freaky parts are played from a CD
-Then the lead for example is played on his synth by him

Then somewhere else I heared that they would loop a certain part of their track, like let's say the intro. And they would play the melodic part. Then when they felt they were ready to move on they punch on their sequencer to start the mid section of the track, etc... and again all free to improvise since it's looping, and you control when to go to the next fase. This is my dream, to do all that stuff live, will be awesome :)

If you want to see the real live artists, then try to find a vid capture from Faithless at Rock Werchter (Belgium). That was ing sweet, but they had a crew of at least 10 people working all sorts of instruments :)

I believe Moby does it with less people, but then again there is more euh ... CD on the background I think.

faithless have relatively simple melodies that could be played live quite easily. I saw Sister Bliss playing live at the NEC and Faithless @ Gatecrasher SSS a few years back. I have also seen Lab4 live, but even they are apparently more of a tweaking knobs and faders rather than hammering the melodies - still they do play some stuff 160bpm+ so fair play, you would have to be amazing to stay in time.

I caught K90 live at Godskitchen a while back, he had a fair amount of equipment with him. I presumed it was a case of him having all the 'parts' assembled, and he could fade sections in as and when, and use his keyboard for effects and stabs and that. He rocked the place so whatever he was doing, he was doing it right!

Thats bull.
I saw him walking away from his jp to the crowd while he was supposed to play + the drummer was allways out of time + you don't hear a difference between the cd version and the live version.

The way me and my buddy work on our live project is (for his tracks) in cubase having several loop points with climaxes or tricky parts between the loop points. In the loop points I mostly play the keyboards and he does some filtering and sound editing + muting tracks. My tracks are sequenced with the rm1x and the mc505 in slave, so that works with songs having several sections, then you switch from the 1 section to the other to do the buildup.

Belgian guru..i do offen answer questions and try to read the topics every 2 or 3 days..
So i will help you out...
i do play a cd with pre-recorded stuff as it is not possible to play and run all sequences live and at once..
i run a laptop 2G I control all channels and audio tracks manual on the virtual table.
Controlled by a Mackie mixing desk.
So i'm sweating like hell when we are in the middle of the live
Drums added semi-LIVE by Ivan,a wicked rock/pop drummer.
Come and check us out one of these....

Those were his exact words m8, I didn't say you had to believe it.

it was no offence to you, it's just bull what they said :)
I have a 20 min video and it's just a cd playing and mike yelling a bit to the crowd
Luke Terry
push live @ global gathering was basically not. just stuff playing from cdr and sum guy adding extra drums and mike doing a bit of mcing :stongue:

pvd @ gc nec 2003 i'm not sure, not a single wrong note was played and it sounded exactly the same as the original heh.

Has anybody heard the ferry corsten right of way concert? He's got a live band playing his tunes at the start, its quality, a very different take on doing live trance performances.
