ok
Ive run out of options from my end, maybe there is somebody who can help me out

Ive got a 256 MB USB Memory Stick. And it wont work. I plug it in, and my computer says
USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctions and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message

Ive clicked, followed thru, and cant find anything that helps me out here. Ive tried restarting, no avail.
Ive tried other USB things in the same plugs and my Webcam and netMD work fine. Ive used the stick on this computer before, and it worked fine. Ive taken it to a friends computer down the hall, it works fine.

so Im confused
The stick works(but not on my computer)
the plugs all work

from what I can tell, is that the driver isnt working, but I cant find how to fix that.

In Device Manager for this item it says that No drivers are installed for this device.

If you are having problems with this device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter

clicking trouble shoot takes me back to the begining
if I change tabs to the driver tab, and try to update it then it tells me to put the install disk into the drive. THERE WAS NO INSTALL DISK, ITS PLUG AND PLAY!

ok..Thats about what I know.

Im pretty sure its teh driver, but I cant figure out how to fix it.
anybody got tips/hints?

first of all, what windows is it?

1. try to update the driver through windows update. when you click on "reinstall driver" there should be an option, check "windows update"

2. go to the memory stick company's website and look for drivers under either "support" or "download" :)

It works just fine on other computers
so its not corrupted

the ports work with other things, so they work.. I DONT KNOW!

Boot into Safe Mode and look for ghost drivers. I'm not sure if they're as much of a problem in XP as they were in 9x, but delete each extra driver for that device, then shut down all background apps in msconfig, reboot and connect the device.

Problems like this normally result due to too many background apps (TSRs) in the background when the device is first detected.

The memory stick doesn't need drivers but your USB card does. So uninstall the drivers, restart, and when it asks for new drivers either use the CD that came with the pc or let XP install its own. If that doesnt work it could be a usb hardware issue.

i'd assume 250 computers have onboard USB before assuming one has a card.

I know how to start up in safe mode, but searching for drivers and stuff???

whether or not usb is onboard or not it still uses drivers silly. but since his other devices are working fine he probably just needs update the driver by going to manufacturer website.

You only need to uninstall the driver if its corrupted, but in ur case it doesnt sound like it is.
