The "2005 draft" is not likely to happen. The "2005 draft" is more of a draft for people who are skilled in language (particularly Arabic) and computer areas which the military lacks currently and needs. This is nothing new; the military already has a draft for people who are skilled in the medical field for "just in case" situations. Bills that have been introduced into the senate and house that have proposed universal military service for those between the ages of 18-26 have been met with fierce opposition. Btw the senate and house armed services committees, for the most part, are against the draft anyway.

drafts scare the hell out of me.

i doubt one will be reinstated. if senators/reps listen to their constituents (LIKE THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO)i doubt the proposals will go through.

But they don't. That's why they are called 'politicians'.:D

Don't you just love the irony?
Bush is in favor of a draft to fight a war that he started (well of course he is, he doesn't have to be anywhere near the fighting) and back during Vietnam, he essentially avoided the draft by having his daddy get him into the Airforce reserve.
rat bastard
If I were in the military, this would make me sick. Why do people want to fight for a man this spineless?

North Korea has a million man Army, China has 200 million man Army. I don't feel as if they are over reacting. Although I do disagree with a draft, nobody should be forced into anything they don't want to do. They should give an incentive to join or higher pay or things to make people to decide to join on their own, but not by a draft. I'm a lieutenant in the Army btw.

Respect buddy. Don't take my posting this as being anti-military because it's quite the opposite as I have family and friends in the military.

Anyways, I saw Clarke on 60 Minutes and it was a damning interview.

He said that he and CIA director Tenet continually told the Bush cabinet about the threat of Al Qaeda, and they basically ignored it.

By the time they had finally held a meeting about Al Qaeda after Clarke had been asking for attention to the Al Qaeda threat since inauguration day, it was already Sept. 4th 2001.

After Sept 11th, Rumsfeld and the neocons were already talking of bombing Iraq. Clarke says Bush yelled at him to "find" a link between Saddam and Al Qaeda. The CIA could find no such link, and the last incident of Iraqi terror perpetrated against the US was when Saddam tried to kill Bush's father eight years ago. The neocons rejected this assertion and used the corporately controlled media to dupe the American public into believing Iraq and Sept 11th were connected.

Just damning. I wish I could post a link to the interview, but let me try and find a transcript.

America is going straight down the ter lately

I feel the same way that you do about the direction of the country in terms of erosions of our freedoms granted under the Constitution, the state of the economy (the markets have lost all their gains from their earlier rally from the tax cuts and we are still millions of jobs in the hole), but terror is on a global scale now.

I think anywhere from Australia, to the UK, to obviously Spain is now vulnerable. Obviously NYC and other major cities are still prime targets. Since the invasion of Iraq, recruitment for terror organizations is also way up.

Notwithstanding recent stories in the news media and on the Internet, Selective Service is not getting ready to conduct a draft for the U.S. Armed Forces -- either with a special skills or regular draft. Rather, the Agency remains prepared to manage a draft if and when the President and the Congress so direct. This responsibility has been ongoing since 1980 and is nothing new. Further, both the President and the Secretary of Defense have stated on more than one occasion that there is no need for a draft for the War on Terrorism or any likely contingency, such as Iraq. Additionally, the Congress has not acted on any proposed legislation to reinstate a draft. Therefore, Selective Service continues to refine its plans to be prepared as is required by law, and to register young men who are ages 18 through 25.
