Work Flow

What is your work flow when you are working on a track? I mean do you start with melody, then work on bassline, or whatever. Now I know someone is going to chime in and say "figure it out for yourself", but I'm just looking for examples and I'll build my own from there..

Thanks,

then work around it before and after

One word:

Usetheforumsearch.

And I usually do chords or melody first, then the other one, then other synths (including bass), then a beat, then make the song.

Two words..
You.

Some peep who joined in January tells me to search? I did a ing search. off self righteous thread crapper.

Regardless of that, people tell noobs to search when a topic is posted that comes up 3 times a week.. Get off the "do the search" bandwagon.

IMO, both of you need to calm down...

but usually i start the chord structure, arrange the track to fit the chord structure.. then i add the melody to fit the track... why?? you are more limited in the creativity of your track if you start with the melody first and try to arrange everything according to it unlike if you arrange the track first and add in a melody.. which gives you a lot more flexibility..

funny stuff...

I can never finish a track so I don't think I should answer :p

the four songs I have on my website are the only four that I consider to be reasonably good after producing for four years... so that's an average of one track per year! :D

I've already done my track for this year, it was Liquify :p

i start from the very beginning...and think about the way i want a track to progress...i suppose that ways not for everyone though...

I like that idea of arrangement before finalizing a melody.

I come up with mad melodies all the time!... I must have easily 50 to 70 unfinished ideas sitting on my computer. I need to get busier.

I usually like this....:

perc > bassline > pre-melodies > buildups&climax > melodies > breakdowns > arrangement.

I'm thinking I should do arrangement closer to the beginning.

I do percussion first. I mean, not the WHOLE PERCUSSION RANGE AND PROGRESSION OF DOOM, but I try to get my kick/basic hat pattern down. I can usually 'feel' where I'm going with the song by the hat pattern. Then I try to get the bassline sound down. From there...I start working on the chords, then the melody...

Main reason I start with the perc/bass first is because that's usually what I have the most difficulty with, in terms of production.

I have the most problem with the first minute or so of a track.. the intro.. i can make melodies with the best of them but that's about it.. any suggestions?
