Why banning of homosexual marriage shouldn't be allowed

From the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:
| quote: | Article 16.
(1) Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and to found a family. They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution. |
Banning homosexual marriage would be a contridiction to Article 16 part 1, as you see. Therefor, President Bush, as President of the United States, which is a member of the United Nations, has no rights to ban marriage of homosexuals, as Article 16 part 1 rules that men and women of full age have the right to marry. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights can be found at http://www.un.org/Overview/rights.html |

| Do married couples get some kind of financial benefits in the US, or is this commotion due to principles only? |

Yea married couples get like 1000+ or so federal benefits.
Like the ability to give unlimited gifts to each other.
Or rights to see each other in a hospital.
other stuff i do not remember off the top of my head. |

It will be a ballot issue down here in Georgia this November.
If it passes we're going to outlaw it in our Constitution...

Just according to the above, that wouldnt hold in a court of law for the simple reason that is interpretable as follows:
It does not explicitly say without any limitation to sexual orientation. Thus, this article can be interpreted as NOT giving positive rights of marriage to people on grounds of sexual orientation, and used to discriminate against them.
I mention that it COULD be interpreted in that fasion, rather than being interpreted as all men and women of full age, and with a good lawyer, the article wouldnt hold up.
Note that I am NOT against gay marriages...simply pointing out that referring to article 16 of the UN charter won't take you very far in convincing people who are opposed to it. |

http://www.religioustolerance.org/mar_bene.htm has a fairly complete list.
Whilst I do support gay marriage, I don't think that referring to the UN charter is going to help much, considering the fact that the US is basically controlled by conservatives, and that US conservatives seem to harbour a lot of dislike for the UN at the moment. |

 :D
Even if Article 16 included sexual orientation, Bush would just ignore it, since after all the U.S. is so much more powerful and cooler than the U.N. |

Whenever you're ready ;) Granted, if the discussion's only between the two of us (which it seems to be) it might be more appropriate to PM or MSN the conversation. :) |
