In the new trance production site I'm toying around with the idea of doing a monthly column where I'll "tear apart" a recent/popular trance song. I'll give details on the chord progression, melody, structure, techniques used and any other points of interest. I'm from a jazz background and I've come to realize the best way to learn music is by studying the works of others. I think the article will cut out the leg work and get straight to the meat of analyzing what works in "good" trance tracks.

When you start making a chord progression must you make first the lowest note or the highest?

it's a good idea to start with a tonic chord.. if you're using an a minor chord progression, start with an a minor chord..

the chord progression I gave you earlier (ACE,CEG,DFA,GBD) is an A minor chord progression. From a VERY basic standpoint - there are 2 scales.. minor and major.. minor is sad (most trance is in minor) and major is happy (all happy hardcore and some trance is in major) The key of A Natural minor is easy to work with becuase it has no sharps or flats, and the key of C major is easy to work with becuase it also has no sharps or flats (the scale is all white keys)

check out this chord progression chart I made.. might be able to help you out
