Trance Dictionary Project

Idea: there are a lot of different terms used to describe an actual song (as opposed to all the terms used to describe the different genres)
like...
lead synth, buildup etc.
I propose then that we pool everyone's definitions on these key terms and develop a trance dictionary so that we all know what we are talking about, and so we can all review songs with a little more accuracy than just saying "wicked choon" everytime.
So if this interests you, post key terms and your defintions of them.. or just a key term, or a definition for a key term someone else has posted... and together we can evolve our little hobby. |

Build Up
Drum Roll
Pan
Melody
Rift (Riff?)
Lead
High Hat
Snare
Ambience
Ok thats my contribution...someone define them! |

| It’s a nice idea, but this has the potential to digress into a massive argument when people can’t agree over things! |

Doesn't look like that's an issue... apparently there's nothing but apathy and lethargy to be found...
ah well I guess we'll just have to live with 'wicked choon' as the only phrase in our vocabulary for sometime to come |

Synth - an electronic sound that can be varied to produce a melody.
Bassline - the main or loudest bass drum sound.
Kick - derived from a drum set where the main round drum that sits on the floor gets "kicked" by a rubber mallot to produce a bass sound.

Reverb - a continuous echo-like sound that decays over time, rather than immediately.
Break Down - the succesive omission of layers of sound to arrive at a simplistic sound.
Build Up - the successive addition of layers of sound to arrive at a complex combination.
Drum Roll - a very quick and constant beat with very small intervals between beats that comes just before the climax or final breakdown.
Pan - the movement of sound to certain speakers such as right or left.
Melody - a series of organized notes.
Rift (Riff?) - I don't know this one.
Lead - the main part such as a lead vocalist.
High Hat - derived from the sound produced by a certain part of a drumset that looks like two cymbals facing each other on a stand. The top cymbal is lifted and then dropped onto the bottom.

Snare - Also derived from the sound produced by a part of a drumset. When a cymbal looking object sitting on a stand is hit.
Ambience - a quiet atmosphere produced by subtle changes in long synths with very little or not beat. |

Synth - An analog component that reproduces sounds by electrical signals modified by electrical components; or digital when the components are simplified by mathematical operations.
Kick - The loudest drum (generally sets the tempo)
Rift (Riff?) - A continuous drum that repeats itself at such high rate that generates its own sound frequency.
Lead - the mid frequency part
Baseline - the low frequency part generated by a synth (not drum)
Out of key - when two songs or two parts of the song (generally the baseline and leadline) are based on different music keys |

Pad = Strings
Fill = like a machinegun snareroll :toothless
Break = When the beat stops and melody or vocals come in (there are more possible things to fill a break)
Cut-off frequence = you know when a sample starts of being kinda vague and then becomes full and bright (know how to explain in dutch but not very good in english..) you understand?
Loop = A contious sound/sample that keeps repeating.
Sample = a sound (can be everything, drumloops, effects, kicks, synth etc.)
Vocals = looks obvious to me :toothless |
