i remember a few years ago when i used to play in bands, we had our setup in the basement, and we covered the walls with that soft cushoning stuff that have like spikey stuff on the surface... u know what im talking about?? i dont know the name if it.. it can come in different colors and its all really soft.. its like a sponge.

i could be upstairs and hardly hear the drums and the bass.

there are alotta ways to sound proof a room so it really depends on the size of the room, materials used throughout the house and the number of windows in the room.

cheapest ways to sound proof a room is to use either the foam mat or the foam pyramids. The soundproof mat u can get in different thickness and either with an adhesive side so all u have to do is stick it or the non adhesive type, which u have to apply cement glue or vinyl glue to stick it where u want.... u kinda can't stick it on walls though cuz it looks ugly... so it is usually used in unfinished basements and rooms. Pyramids are less ugly and all u gotta do is staple them to the wall (find the studs using a studfinder and mark where they are... staple the pyramids to the studs) :p. So it all depends on the room.

here are some pics:

My brother and I built a studio in our house in Richmond Hill.

There is specific sound insulation you can buy @ Home Depot. It has the added benifit of being fire-resistant. The insulation is black in color and goes between the walls, floors, ceiling, etc.

I recommend that (just be sure to sound proof the floor and ceiling as well.

Let me know if you want more info.

A friend of mine used egg cartons, the bumpy sides. I think the best thing about this makeshiftiest-of-the-makeshift ideas is that you can paint it and it looks really cool. He painted his black and white squares...made me think of a Dali painting. Oh yeah, and it soundproofs quite well!

I'm thinking of corking my bedroom at my new place (since I won't be able to put the soundproof into the walls). I haven't looked into costs yet - but it would be sweet. :)

Tara u could also use shelves you already have and fill them up with books. It works very well

Egg cartons work, but only the styrofoam ones, not the cardboard ones, and you really need to find a good source of egg cartons to do it (unfortunately, commercial kitchens usally get flats of eggs on cardboard, not styrofoam)
