The egg cartons and foam on walls really just absorb mid to high frequencies and stop reflections (Echoes) in a room. (Yes, they stop transmission of those frequencies from getting out as well, but you still have to deal with the BASS (Low Frequencies) that come from the room)
To properly soundproof a room, you must build a room WITHIN a room -- and you need to 'float' it.
I'll try to elaborate on this some more later when I find some good diagrams (or i can draw some up..) |

thanks for the replies everyone.
i've heard about the room w/n a room thing. that's a possibility... might bit a bit on the bling-y side.
i'm thinking that it will likely have to be a multi-pronged approach.
any suggestions are welcome- it's not a basement but a spare bedroom, so i can't totally mess up the walls. |

sounds like ur gonna have to put something between the drywalls.. i dunno if whoever owns the house is gonna be too cool having a layer of substance over the paint

DO NOT USE EGG CARTONS AT ALL!!!! I REPEAT... D O N O T USE EGG CARTONS!!
I tell you this after an education in sound engineering.
real solutions include... auralex foam, wool/cotton fabrics fastenned around wooden frames acting as deading panels, and RJs suggestion for that home-depot bought stuff is also good, but the name has slipped my mind. |

| if u really want to get dirt, there are some fiberglass soundproof insulators. but that would require u to tear down the walls though. :wtf: |

| the problem is, is that it's an apartment i will be renting. I can't tear down walls. I may be able to build a 2nd wall to create an 'air pocket' but that's about as invasive as i can get. When i move out i want to be able to revert the room back to a regular room. |

| I have 8 ft. mirror panels along the adjoining wall to the other bedroom in my room, and it works pretty good as well. I have no idea who told me that mirrors would work, but they so some what. Its pretty cool actually. |

She's movin' to the big K-W! She's actually been living and working there since March 17th, hence why we haven't seen her lovely presence on the boards too much as of late ;)
(and note to Tara: I'll miss the pants off of you too when I'm gone!!!) |
