Ok, Im gonna be going on a shopping spree and I initally was driven to get the Whitelabels, but as a DJ just starting out, my friends advised that I not go all out. So my question is, the 2 carts Im looking at are the Stanton 680HP and Shure M44-7's. I know both are good carts, but I want to know which are better. Im looking for nice clear cut sound.

Thx.

i would go with the shure's. they have an overall cleaner and flatter response then the stantons.
Vlad
Does anyone have any experience with the Stanton 680HP carts?
Frode
I have no experience with the Stantons, but I have the Shure M44-Gs.
They are awesome. The M44-7s are scratching carts.

the m44-7's bass response is amazing... i heard the stantons have wiring problems

i've haven't had any experience with the 680hps but the m44G gets awesome reviews. You definitely can't go wrong there. Heck if the m44G is unavailable just get the m447 theres hardly much difference anyway, and if you don't worry about wearing your records a little more than normal, then you'll be pretty happy with the m447s. bass response is really good.

I don't have experience with the other Stanton cartridges, but I did start out with two Stanton 500ALII's. They were pretty good for starting and getting the hang of things without worrying about damaging the needles -- they were only $30 a piece for the cartridge.

From those I went straight up to Ortofon Concorde Pro S cartridges...they make me very happy. :D

The only problem I experienced with the Stanton cartridges is that the replacement styli (NOT the ones that came with the cartridges, strangely) had balance problems with the L/R channels. On some of the replacement styli I bought, one side would be louder than the other. If you're anything like me, that sort of thing will absolutely drive you up the walls.

Ok, so I guess I cant go wrong with the Shure M44-G... I didnt know the M44-7's were scratching carts. :thepirate

Thanks for the help.

The m44*'s are very good, but if you really want a "beginner" cart, those aren't it ;). The 500ALII's from Staton are cheap, and good enough for starting out.
Vlad
Its ok, Ill spend alittle extra to get some quality carts. :gsmile:

How do M44G compare to Ortofons in sound quality?
