HARDEST games ever

Maybe I'm just too uber leet, but games these days just don't feel as challenging as they used to. So, lets relive some old memories. What are some of the hardest games you've ever played?

Off the top of my head, Breath of Fire 1/2 come to mind, as well as Empire Strikes Back for SNES, though it could have just been that I was like 9 at the time.

E.T. The Extraterrestrial(Atari 2600) - ...WTF? I didn't even know what was going on in that game, much less come anywhere near to beating it.

Killer Instinct(SNES) - Hard mode...good luck.

Super Mario Kart(SNES) - Most advanced Rainbow Road track on highest difficulty. AAAH! rainbow road is evil. And pretty gay I might add:wtf: (no offense).

Kung Fu(NES) - Frustration!

My Favorite:
Kaboom(Atari 2600) - Hard, but fun once you get into it. I used to get into that game bigtime...was shaking usually, after coming off of a level where the bombs were going so fast that you had to rely pretty much wholly on the criminal's movement to catch them. Actually it was wierd, I dunno, on the faster levels I would just begin to stare at the center of the screen and somehow be able to catch the bombs that were moving uber fast...maybe I was watching the criminal, maybe the bombs (somehow), maybe both.

Gran Turismo on playstation one. The International A licence was so hard. Eventually when I did get it.. i was totally over the moon :D

There is no such thing as a hard RPG, imo. ;) Unless you try and breeze through it without leveling up some here and there.

I'd have to say the original Ghouls N Ghosts was the most frustrating game for me.

I remember I got very frustrated with Wizards & Warriors II for NES. Back then they gave you limited lives and saves and continues and the controls where much more difficult, not like most games today.

GoldenEye 007 (N64): holy hell.. some of those levels took me hundreds of tries.. the Aztec temple was a b!tch on medium but a piece of cake on hard..
Perfect Dark (N64): i gave up..
a ton of games from the Genesis just made me pissed..
for example..
Road Rash.. once you were on level 5, it was like 10mins a race, and them turns! jeeeeez.. i'd always friggin destroy my bike at bout 75% through..

ROGUE SQUADRON - N64

hard to get all the gold medals, my brother did it though, with a player's guide

Ah, Rainbow Road was easy once you'd mastered the 'Jump-Off-The-Track-Fly-For-Half-A-Year-And-Land-Back-On-The-Track' trick. :)

I think a more important question is this...

Are older games generally more difficult, or do we only remember them as difficult because we were less experienced gamers?

More difficult because many of them were linear and you had to have a straight run through the entire game without the help of saving. At least that's what made GNG so hard for me.

I found Final Fantasy 8 to be quite difficult, and I've played through quite a number of RPGs in my time. (Parasite Eve 1 & 2, Xenogears to name a few of the more challenging ones)
