You know, I always thought that no dot was necessary when the abbreviation had the same first and last letters as the full word. It was only when the abbreviation had a different first and last letter to the full word that the dot was included.
For example, if you shortened 'versus' to 'vs':
Versus = vs
But if you shortened 'versus' to 'ver' you would have to write it 'ver.' Maybe I'm wrong.

I've only ever saw versus in its abbreviated form with a period following it. Check any sporting event that uses "versus" alot and you'll see what I mean.
You can even do a spell check on it in Microsoft Word and it will correct "vs" to "vs.". |

They're both technically correct, but "vs." seems to be more with convention. |
