First of all, check ALL the following registry keys for anything suspicious (LM=local machine, CU=current user):

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices

Edit: for the truly clueless, this is done through regedit :p

Also check:
Start Menu -> Programs -> Startup

C:\Windows\win.ini - "load" or "run" sections
C:\Windows\system.ini - same thing

Finally, download BHO Cop and see if you can find/disable anything suspicious.

If you're running Windows XP, you can check a lot of this through msconfig (just go to run and type msconfig in the box). If you have that program, you can also click on the Services tab and check "hide all microsoft services", see if there's anything suspicious.

That should cover just about all possibilities of trojan/spyware. If you can't solve the problem by cleaning out all of those places, then it's most likely an actual virus, and you need to get proper antivirus software.

Situation...purchased an XP computer XP with Norton installed...trial Norton subscription expired in Feb...no spyware in Feb...Renewed Norton subscription Sunday...tons of Spyware today...coincidence? :eyes:
MERLIN
no coincidence, norton deals with viruses not spyware.

i started using pest patrol to handle spyware, which seems to work better then ad-aware and spybot search and destroy

USE OPERA!!!

Simcut
mate, grab Spy Sweeper and scan using that, it works like a dream, so much better than adaware and the other one.

but i suggest u dont click it unless u want the same problem i have

I found this on an employees computer. I first deleted the program by going to the control panel and going through add/remove programs. It was there so I simply removed it. After that I ran Ad-aware and Spy Sweeper and so far it has not returned.

You really need to purchase something to at least attempt to protect your computer. Nothing is perfect or fool proof, but it is better than the alternative.
