ME is the worst os microsoft has released.. XP second, i don't know what sort'a set up you had with 2k but i've been running it for years and no problem at all... but i guess it comes down to personal choice...
i sudjest 2k with service pack 4 installed, make sure your mem usage is set to background services, makes running vsti's much easier..
see how that goes for ya.. |
Obsolutly. Worst suggestion ever is to install ME.
ME is really just Win98SE with pretty graphics to make it look like XP.
Win2K with recent SP is very solid and just as stable as XP.
However I will disagree with you about XP. XP is basically Win2K with some extra to make it more backward compatible, it is by far not the 2nd worse OS made by MS. I would take XP over 95 or 98 anyday of the week, its better than NT too :) IMO. |

This is the reason why you should second guess all advice given on the internet.

have you change3d your page file to reflect the new amount of memory you put in? Do a search on google on how to do it if you dont know, 1.5x your memory for the first value and 3x it for the second. i forgot the value names.
also, have you service packed 2k and applied all hotfixes?
|

the only two worth considering for music are XP and 2k on windows. 98 is unstable, regardless of how much people rate it, its a seriously unstable OS. Windows ME is for tards. Nuff said.
Azza, as I said, if your unsure of the terms or how to do something, google it. Google is THE best resource you could ever wish for when it comes to doing anything with a computer. Obviosuly, if your using 2k or xp, providing its a legit copy, your good for service packing - go to microsoft.com and do a windows update. |

| I had the same problem....fruity used wwaaaaaaaaay too much cpu. But then again, everything else did too. It ended up being my motherboard. I'd download a copy of performance test from download.com and compare to similar computers....if you benchmark way lower all the way across the board, I"d replace your mobo. That fixed it for me. |

| thats a bit of a dramatic step to take though, first stop should be your firmware if you suspect your mobo. |

as it seems we just have a little different experience with this OSes :)
I recommended to install ME only for better performance in Fruity, read my post more carefully please, and yes it's unstable but you will have smth like 1.5x speed increase according to 2k.
Win2k server + applied sp's is very stable indeed
Win 2k advanced server is better in performance than win2k server
According to my and a lot of people that I perconally know experience Win2k.prof really was that buggy , it crashed 10x times more than ME and not even decent program wanted to work on it....
may be now with all sp's it works fine, but I use server now :)
but yes on certain pc it can work stable so you can give it a try :)
Another thing is your sound card, as Alanzo wrote buy good ASIO 2.0 capable sound card, it will greatly boost overall pc performance according to music and lower cpu usage in FL/cubase/logic etc.
No, mossy, Me is'nt for tards, it can be even more stable than win2k prof on certain pc (well, may be not on your pc, sorry) and it have 1.5x performance than 2k when using FL .
I personally have 2k.server. |

What sound card do you have? An ASIO 2.0 capable sound card makes a HUGE difference.. if you're going to get a new one, don't get a creative.. they're horrible for music.. I would go with an m-audio or an EMU (part of creative but not manufactured/designed by them) |
Creative Audigy 2 has added Asio 2 support. Since the user is using softsynths ( V-station ), high quality recording isn't really a topic. |

| Go with WinXP. I use to hate it and switched to a brand new comp with win2k proff. 2k was Buggy as . Always getting those blue screens of death that make you want to pull ur teeth out. Always had a problem, and it wasn't my setup. I switched back to Xp running better than ever now :) |

i work for one of the largest companies in the uk, who oddly has one of the largest amount of ME machines still waiting to be replaced on our network. Out of 30,000+ machines in our region, 98/ME is the OS that tops helpdesk charts every single month. Mainly stability issues as well.
Fruity is one specific application, which in my opinion does not determine the OS you need to use in the desktop environment. I personally find fruity to be a very responsive program, and a very stable one. I run 2k purely for audio, with a very standard and modest setup. Personally i think fruity isn't to blame, it just highlights an existing problem in your setup (general 'your').
The whole OS debate stems from two things imo, reluctance to change / fear of change.
Elipse - XP does well to hide blue screens I have found, but it doesnt fix the problems, merely avoids them. I cant work out whether thats a good or a bad thing :) |
