Hi

I Recently had a computer bought for me for christmas, it's a athlon AMD 2.2GHZ with 256mb ram it had no operating system on it so i installed windows 2000, i use fruity and the cpu monitor on fruity is very high even when i had 2 v stations, so i thort i would upgrade the ram so i bought a 512mb ram chip along with my already 256 ram chip and it still hasn't made ne difference, the cpu is really high even after 2 v stations it's proper p*ssing me off, i went to see a guy yesterday and he said its cause i have windows 2k, and i need xp apparently, can ne1 help me as it's doing my head in and i d'nt really fancy forking out nemore. thanks

use windows xp
windows me is faster than xp but less stable (umm, but not on all pc's - on certain pc me can be more stable than xp and vice versa or they both can be stable - depends :D)
windows 2000 server (with all service packs) is nice os indeed but if
you want good performance with FL in Win2k.server you have to 1) switch off all unnecessary services (Start=>Admin tools=>services)
2) swith off all annoying programs that starting when win2k starts
(you have to clean registry for this))

why? create new disk partition and copy all staff to new partition or burn important stuff to CDR or DVDR. Or borrow from friend a new harddisk and copy. BACKUPPPPING Different choices!

have you change3d your page file to reflect the new amount of memory you put in? Do a search on google on how to do it if you dont know, 1.5x your memory for the first value and 3x it for the second. i forgot the value names.

also, have you service packed 2k and applied all hotfixes?

have you got asio drivers or asio4all?

what else do you have installed? i dual boot with 2k for music and xp for everything else, it makes a huge differance.

stick 2k on your first partition if you do, as thats the quickest, or so i have been told.

i use a 1.4ghz athlon, 512mb of ram and whilst that spec of PC will set you back about £200 or less these days, i still managed 4 or 5 vstis running fine, unless its pads with shed loads of effects, then my pc dies. i managed to get fruity up to like 255% cpu, but seeing as thats impossible, i ended up crashing my machine.

also, in fruity, look at 'smart disable for all' in your mixer, and render any parts of the track your happy with as WAVs run miles nicer than real time vstis.

i got a amd athlon xp2000+ with 96mb SDram

and i can run 8 v stations with unison synths with only a 60% cpu load. :) go me

edit:

i got 256mb ddr now wee and my cpu is running the full 1.67ghz not 1.25

What sound card do you have? An ASIO 2.0 capable sound card makes a HUGE difference.. if you're going to get a new one, don't get a creative.. they're horrible for music.. I would go with an m-audio or an EMU (part of creative but not manufactured/designed by them)

windows 2000 prof is a buggy , don't even think about installing it :)))))

wtf? no offence bud but i really question your understanding of windows 2k..

ME is the worst os microsoft has released.. XP second, i don't know what sort'a set up you had with 2k but i've been running it for years and no problem at all... but i guess it comes down to personal choice...

i sudjest 2k with service pack 4 installed, make sure your mem usage is set to background services, makes running vsti's much easier..

see how that goes for ya..
