I know most of you all don't like me, but this is my first "rational" and un-immature thread. I have drumline tryouts tomorrow, and my nerves are shot. I might brake *stop playing* because I'm so nervous....I don't know why...
Please, any advice, any way to calm down????? They're from 4-6 Tomorrow! :nervous: |

1) What the hell are drumline tryouts?
2) Ambient stuff usually helps me, although I'm almost always pretty chill. |

| ive thrown up before at a track meet, just before a race. a lot of pressure is on me in the relays. . . i run the 3rd leg. 3rd legs job is to keep what has been gained by the 1st and 2nd one or carry it further. then u hand it off to the 4th leg(best runner) to carry us home. we were a good team, and won several races and made runner-up for state.:) |

| meditate, listen to music that calms you. that might work. plus, have some confidence that you will do well. that will help you to do well and not be nervous about it. |

Ah...drumline. I was the sideline section leader in high school, and also did instruction for the battery (marching) percussion. I'll give you a few things I think will help you, as they were they things I told my section/students when I taught them percussion.
1. Look confident. You'd be amazed at how much an air of confidence can either cover mistakes, or make them look intentional.
2. Keep the tempo. Even if you mess up a note (Or notes), keep the original tempo constant. Get back in to the original tempo, not the tempo created from the mistake. This also covers lots of f-ups.
3. Remember dynamics! This is the most overlooked/forgotten part in high school percusion and band. Over emphasize every accent, crescendo, etc. This will make you stick out from 90% of the other auditioners.
4. Don't rush fast passages. It seems contradictory but most people rush when the notes get faster. Keep your tempo constant during rolls, flams and other quick elements.
5. Relax. Trust in your ability, don't try to do what you are unable to do, and realize that drumline is not the coolest thing ever. (Trust me)
Hope that helps...from an old(er) percussionist. |

yea, it can be nerve-racking sometimes, especially when the coaches and other runners put hard pressure on you. im usually talkative, but before i a race, ide withdraw to my own world. listen to some ambient, and like not talk for an hour. if anyone tried talkin to me, i seemed a little irratible. just dont bother me before a race, and im cool;) |

Gurl, dont stress it so much. Think about this:
"How bad do i want this??"
Then, think about :
"I need 2 show these upperclassmen up.(and whoever is/are the section leader[s])
Concentrate on playing. Not too hard, tho. Just DONT think about how nervous you are. Think about how great it'll be when every1 in ur skewl is watching you in the drumline doing ur cadences ;)
It'll be okie gurl...No worries! Good luck babe!:toothless |

find your power animal.
but for real, it can work. Find a place, idea, object that relaxes you. get mildly stressed out before the try outs and think about that object idea thingy....and breathe deeply.
the basic idea is to make a thought relaxing, then when you are stressed nervous, think of it and hopefulyl like in the less stressful situation, it will calm you.
the mind is a wonderufl thing. |
