Might I suggest 2 very old but very peaceful, relaxing songs.
Orbital - Halcyon + On + On
Chicane featuring Maire Brennan of Clannad - Saltwater (Original mix)
Best of luck, Alyssa. *huggle.*

Ah...drumline. I was the sideline section leader in high school, and also did instruction for the battery (marching) percussion. I'll give you a few things I think will help you, as they were they things I told my section/students when I taught them percussion.
1. Look confident. You'd be amazed at how much an air of confidence can either cover mistakes, or make them look intentional.
2. Keep the tempo. Even if you mess up a note (Or notes), keep the original tempo constant. Get back in to the original tempo, not the tempo created from the mistake. This also covers lots of f-ups.
3. Remember dynamics! This is the most overlooked/forgotten part in high school percusion and band. Over emphasize every accent, crescendo, etc. This will make you stick out from 90% of the other auditioners.
4. Don't rush fast passages. It seems contradictory but most people rush when the notes get faster. Keep your tempo constant during rolls, flams and other quick elements.
5. Relax. Trust in your ability, don't try to do what you are unable to do, and realize that drumline is not the coolest thing ever. (Trust me)
Hope that helps...from an old(er) percussionist. |
Thanks. I pretty much have it down. Supposed to do a flew inverted flam taps, but I'm not going to. Well in between a seventeen-stroke roll and a 7 stroke roll...only one set...but he won't notice. *He's not good at drumming, my band director* hehe...LUCKY ME! everyone who recommended music, thanks, but I don't have room in my book-bag to take a c.d. player let alone a c.d. tomorrow. Our section leaders I'm cool with, so that's "good." I'm the only girl trying out. The one person I'm close with on drumline is graduating this year:( Thanks! ....
The weed thing, yea trancevandyk is right, and besides someone got busted recently on the band trip for doing that...heh , long story.
Also, I don't through up, I will probably brake *if I get TOO nervous* ...
Pink-it all leads down to it, I'll probably want to piss on the guys, lol, and just blow them away! No one's coming to watch me tryout!:(
Oh well
thanks again!
much love,
lyss
ps. tranc3-where have you been? |

you need to learn how to use that to your advantage. it will take you far in the real world if you play it right. |

I've been to about 1 million and 1 tryouts for soccer, basketball, baseball, shows, track&field, etc. Before you do whatever you do (in your case drumming), focus on your objective. think about it. think about your technique and what should happen sequentially. Then when you get up to do it, just DO IT. Don't let every detail stress you out. It's better that you have solid flowing routine that to stress every detail and make it choppy. Before I throw javelin at track meets, I usually just walk around the field for 15 mins tracing my steps. I hang on my jav to get the feel of it, and when it's my turn to throw, I just shoot down the runway and fling it. It's got to be natural.
If you relax and havefun with it you'll do fine. Take it from a seasoned try-out'er. |
