Television Ratings

I am curious to find out how television stations make money just by viewers watching their programs. What is the process. Meh, this isn't worded correctly, but I am not sure how else to spit it out !

For example, an estimated 80 million people are expected to watch the finale of freinds. How does the television station get money from viewers?

The answer to this part of your question is: they don't get money from the viewers, its from advertisers.

Just as tordan said they sell advertising.

The gross rating point (GRP) helps to determine the value of the 30 second commercial spot (amongst other things such as demographic match, etc).

Thnx guys ! I knew that advertising was involved, I just thought cable companies would give some money to the television stations. Advertising prices during freinds must be intense!!

The commercial spots for the finale of friends is estimated at about 2 million a piece, pretty crazy eh?

2 million a piece? wow that is nuts !! I wonder if the company actually benefits from the advertisement, considering how much they are paying for it. Honestly, I usually don't pay too much attention to commercials...

It's kind of like the superbowl....which is the most watched event in North America...which is why advertising is so expensive then...by the way it's about 20+ mil for 30 seconds...so if you go over 30...you can imagine what happends then. I guess the idea is that you'll get the most exposure during that time which is why it's so expensive.

You're off by a factor of 10.

This year it was $2.25 million that marketers paid for one 30-second during the superbowl.

oh....my bad :stongue: wait...really? wow I was way off then...are you sure they are paying NBC 20 mil/30 seconds then? Cause that's pretty insane...I think it's 2...:conf:

Amen.

The superbowl = 2 1/4 million for one 30 sec spot.
Friends = 2 million for one 30 sec spot.

That has to be a record for NBC for a sitcom.

The company benefits because of the exposure to the public. They spend tons of money on these commercials and engineer them to make you want their products. They prove their 30 sec spots with focus groups first, then unleash them on the public.... not that i got anything against em  ugggggg the commercials get worse and worse too..... The latestest rediculous has got to be that maxwell house coffee commercial....makes me cringe :nervous:

That's true...but the thing is I haven't seen almost ANY of the good commercials that were running in the US during superbowl cause Canadian tv puts their own ads and they were CRAP! :whip:
I wanted to see all those pepsi ads that were super funny...those were actually good but in Canada we get our own...even if you watch friends on NBC, you will most likely still get commercials from Global and not the ones from the states that are usually worth watching...
