GITS is great!

Akira and Cowboy Bebop are also amazing. I like sci-fi based anime more than fantasy stuff like Oh my Godess, etc.

Started as a manga as Nou said.

I have the trade paperback.

There are massive differences.

The movie is straight up serious, while the manga has a lot of comedic moments....

The game for PS1 was pretty cool. too. :)

Such a good movie. The series, Ghost In The Shell: Standalone Complex takes place after the movie.

Makai - Beneath The Mask. If you like hard and dark Drum 'n' bass, check that'n out. Samples the main theme from GitS. So good.

Takkyu Ishino - Ghost in the Shell

The concept of what true techno is... what makes me cry in worship... and what convinced me to watch the anime, even though I'm always interrupted :p

The series is better than the movie. The movie has good animation, but was a terrible transition from the manga. I don't like this movie. I can think of at least 5 other anime movies that are better than this one. And for the record, yes, Stand Alone Complex is cool.

the series is called Stand Alone Complex and it may be airing on adult swim in july. there's also a manga by Masamune Shirow (who's art is incredible, btw) and a second movie coming out soon.
Matt
the movie is wicked-awesome

Animation is incredible.

People behind Ghost worked on a project called Blood(?) and the animation in that is even more mind-blowing.
