Review - James Zabiela @ System May 7th, 2004 (pg. 5)

What an awesome event!
It was the most fun I had in System since Mauro Picotto last year.

I wasn't quite sure what "dark and deep tech-house mixed with cutting-edge breakbeat" was supposed to sound like (first thought "probably Prog" ) But it turned out great! Too bad he slowed down the intensity around 5 am and started playing more of breakbeat.

math class went reasonably at 9am...had a test..should get a perfect or ill be kickin myself all the way to the bank...

zabiela was well worth an all nighter despite early morning class and ill go back see him tear up the floor anytime...definately a downtoearth fun loving EXTREMELY talented dj.

I guess I was the exception to the general consensus because I was much more taken by Steve Mack and Luke Fair's set. I found Zabiela quite disappointing; the beats were quite jarring and resounded in a disjointed mess. Perhaps he was pre-occupied in an experimental state of mind. I found myself leaning against the railing with friends hoping for that magical genius he spread at Labour of Love.

I realise that DJs are entitled to being inconsistent, and maybe he was greatly inspired by his mentor Sasha last summer. I guess the lesson learned is not to expect so much.

To end on a high note, my friends proved to be wonderful companions, and shared my observation. We danced hard for the first few hours, and thank Steve and Luke for that, and shared some good conversation and affection along the way.

I'm glad you came out Erika. Have an amazing summer and we'll rock it at Carl Cox and Tenaglia(not confirmed yet).

To the rest of my companeros, you guys have a special place with me. Thank you for ending the event on a high note. I'm sure there will be many more occasions such as this one to follow.

See you on the 21st!

I must agree that I was expecting a bit more from Zabiela that night -- don't get me wrong; He has VERY EXCEPTIONAL skills -- loved the way he killed with scratching and using his EFX-500 as usual.. but I thought he would do a little more overlaying than he did (i really enjoyed his Essentialmix when he would overlay some Vanilla Sky samples -- i thought it added to the magic of the set).

And yeah.. he played a LOT of breaks which was good but I thought that the mood was a bit too stagnant during those times earlier in his set.

He's STILL amazing and yes, my expectations were high -- but that's HIS fault for being such a wicked DJ and raising the bar like he did :) ;)

Anyway, Luke stole the show for me as well!! Friday night's set was BY FAR the best I've heard from him! His track selection was perfect and didn't bore me at all! Way to go Luke! And Steve Mack opened the place up perfectly!! What a great lineup that night.

Shouts go out to Summer21 (Sandra) and Isaac -- Glad you guys had fun that night and there will be many more to come! Nice meeting Nrg2Nfinit and Partyprincess, Goodnet, and it was nice seeing Ahmed (I dunno if he posts here; but he's ALWAYS around till closing time -- always a trooper)and ... damn.. I know i'm forgetting a couple more. I apologize if i left anyone out.

Hello to all my peeps -- love ya guys. Allegory & Mercure -- thanks for the afterparty at your place (sorry i couldn't stay longer; soo tired and I was looking forward to my own comfy bed ;) )

...Till next time!
