One year is the limit under US military law and they gave him leniency for pleading guilty.
EDIT: 10 dollars says that this post will degrade into America sucks... |

| 1 year is a lot compared to the people who will receive NO punishment for burning, beating, and hanging mutilated american contractor bodies from bridges. I didn't even know there was mandatory jail time for humiliation.:conf: I'd think the public humiliation the soldiers are going through, coupled with the embarassment that comes from a dishonerable discharge would be punishment enough. These people will have a hard time finding work again--I bet a couple of them will have to jump on the book writing bandwagon before all is said and done. |

| The sentencing is short because this soldier allegedly did not carry out the abuse but is the one to take the pictures. As such, prosecutors arranged a plea bargain such that he would undergo a special court martial (with the maximum sentence being what he received) in exchange for his testimony against the other soldiers (and not so much him pleading guilty) who actually carried out the abuses. Their court cases will with be subject to the general court martial which is not restrained by sentencing limits. So essentially, there's nothing going on that you wouldn't see in civil criminal court cases. No need to get your panties in a bunch. |

Yeah I'll take a broomstick up my ass and dogs sicked on me over being fired from the army any day, too.
PS seeing as you have the US flag in your profile, I feel that i should explain that what I've said above was sarcasm.

Wrong under a General Court martial you can get any number of years including the death penalty. He got "Special" court martial that has 1 yr max sentence and the commanding officer has a right to wave the sentence. Which he probably won't do because it such a high profile case. Martha got a stiffer sentence for Christ sake. |
