I bought my first vinyl today, here's what I got:
Safri Duo - Played-A-Live
Paul van Dyk - Tell Me Why
ATC - Aroudn the World
French Affair - My Heart Goes Boom
ATB - Fields of Love
ATB - Don't Stop
Gigi D'Agostino - I'll Fly With You
Alice Deejay - Better Off Alone
Don't laugh but you can tell me what you think is good and whats not. Based on these what other artists/tracks would I like?
But anyway...what should I know about basic vinyl care? I think you're supposed to store vinyl upright, is that right? And how am I supposed to handle it? Is it ok to touch the sides or just the edges? What are some good products to clean vinyl?
I don't really have any turntables right now, but I thought you might find this picture of my parents old turntable funny...for now this is all I have:
This fine piece of equipment includes a quality cartridge and revolutionary s-shaped tonearm. Notice the high quality slipmat and durable wooden case. It also has a very high torque with an amazing 10 second startup time! It even features an on/off switch! It doesn't have a pitch, or 45RPM settings, but who needs that anyway?! Simply amazing! |

Your taste vinyl is pretty commercial, I won't say they are ty becauce everybody has different taste in music and who am I to say the music I like is better than yours. As for other stuff you might like, go down to your local music store check out some of the commercial dance mix compilitions. You might find some tunes on those you might like. I touch vinyl everywhere just don't scratch the grooves and you can buy vinyl cleaners at most record stores.
Your parents have a sweet set-up there.:p |

| Hey what is wrong with commercial trance, but i agree that it doesn't support your own kinda style and puts your own tag on the mix, yet commercial is what everyone hears, it is kinda essential to have "some". my first vinyl, i am a newbie, so it would be faithless we come one....Gettin my Dex soon and i wouldn't trust that turntable with yoru vinyl, could scratch it with that chip wood, well it looks like chip wood, but hey it's up to you |

That is the problem with commercial, everyone has heard it before. I love going to a club or a rave and hearing sick tunes that I have never heard before.;) |

You certainly live up to your name! Yes, some extremely mature cheddar in there, but hey, if you like it spin it, that's what I say.
My first vinyls were:
Utah Saints - Lost Vagueness
Push - Strange World
Coast 2 Coast - Home
Ralphie B - Massive
Members of Mayday - 10 in 01
As you can see, I have also only just started DJ'ing, as these songs are all pretty recent. ish.
You can touch any part of the vinyl you want. That's the beauty of it, you can so easily manipulate it while it's playing. Just don't press sticky fingers all over it though! Also, get yourself a decent vinyl brush, with carbon fibre bristles and a velvet pad, to get rid of all the debris before you play it.
A good way of washing your vinyls: (this is the method the BBC use):
Get some warm water (NOT hot) with some washing up liquid in it. Stand the vinyl in the bowl and turn it round so that all of it gets wet (but try not to get the label too wet though!) and rub it with a cloth. Dry it thouroughly with a towel.
The washing up liquid helps form an anti-static layer to stop dust forming easily on the vinyl, and also gets rid of those sticky fingerprints :).
Peace
By the way, you are having a laugh with that turntable, aren't you? There's no way that's real! |

Well, I could make up an excuse like the place I bought them (Tower Records) doesn't carry much vinyl in the first place (which is true), but really these are the only songs (and more similar) I have heard and like. Maybe if I go to a place that has a listening station I will try some new stuff, but I'm not going to just buy a song I have never heard.
As for that turntable in the picture...it is a real "record player" and it does play my vinyl. It definatly would not work for a DJ. The "slipmat" isn't really a slipmat but a piece of foam (old foam, but foam none-the-less). There would be no point in having a slipmat because if you touch the record it stops. |

A good idea is buying/listening to tracks on the net. I frequent www.bangingtunes.com (UK) & www.groovetech.com (US+UK). www.htfr.com (UK) is a really good place if you know what you're after since they have a big stock but no soundclips whatsoever. www.homebass.com (Canada) is pretty good as well even though I've never actually bought a record from there :D
Could DJTJ please tell me where I can get my grubby little hands on Ralphie B - Massive. God damn I want that track! :stongue: |

| You can buy massive probably anywhere online, I have 2 but it would probably be cheaper to get it on line than for me to send it to you. |

| Nope, that is one track that does not want to be found by me. Would you be willing tyo sell it to me and for how much? |

I bought it from www.hmv.co.uk about a month and a half ago. They still have it if you want to buy it, but they get it on special order from their suppliers and it took about 2 weeks to get it through. It's priced at £6.49. |
