James Lovelock : independent scientist, environmentalist, author and researcher, Doctor Honoris Causa of several universities throughout the world, he is considered since several decades as a one of the main ideological leaders, if not the main one, in the history of the development of environmental awareness. James Lovelock is still today one of the main authors in the environmental field. He is the author of " The GaiaTheory ", and " The Ages of Gaia ", which consider the planet Earth as a self-regulated living being, as well as, more recently his "Homage to GAIA", an autobiography published in september 2000.

James Lovelock is in favor of the use of clean nuclear energy, respectful of the environment : read the introduction of James Lovelock to the book "Environmentalists For Nuclear Energy". He supports the Association of Environmentalists For Nuclear Energy (EFN).

Was watching newsnight in UK and he was on. Just to show thouse greenpeace types that nuclear is best for now, this guy is basicly your daddy and he's says nuclear is the way forward for now. He also said that most of the gren groups basicly base all their theories on rubbish fiqiures and old out dated ideas.

And the funniest part is they all love him and he basicly made a huge contribution to them and was the inspiration for them to get into "greeness".

Yay for realism!!!

Now all we need is for PETA to realise that they're a bunch of idiots. Never trust a vegetarian!

I guess I can start designing the 50Mw rail gun to launch the waste capsules at 30% speed of light into the sun!

It can be done!

I've always wondered about that ... why can't we launch nuclear waste into the sun or space? I won't feel safe until space is more polluted.

exactly, i have thought about that too... really, there got to be something? perhaps not to destroy the balance on earth or so?
Endlesswave
Because it's "too expensive" to launch pollutants and nuclear waste that will end up saving the planet if it's sent into space.
Dervish
Too expensive just now. Might not be in the future :tongue2.

But seriously tho if we did dumb(eject) large ammounts of stuff(waste) would it not like have an effect on our orbit a bit or something?

I agree ,also never trust a women.... anything which bleeds for 5 days and doesn't die is not to be trusted!!!

primary reason? The Challenger accident. solid fuel boosters are way to primitive, costly, and precarious to lift waste into orbit.

If nuclear waste can be shot into the Sun, it will just be swallowed up just like anything else that happens it's way. Don't forget, the Sun is just a giant nuclear furnace. There is not near enough fissionable material in the entire solar system much less our little rock we live on to effect the Sun. The Sun could swallow the entire planet like half a tic-tac.

Use a semi-conductive electric rail gun to launch small "warhead" sized capsules at very high speeds into a collision course with the sun. It can be powered by the same nuclear generators that provide the waste.
St_Andrew
bah, what can be so expensive about shooting it out in the universe... places like sellafield must be much more expensive, or (obviously not)? :conf:

Would we eject more mass than we collect through the atmospere as we careen across the cosmos?

I would think that the amount of matter which we consider garbage is negligible when considering the mass of the entire planet.

A technology like that could have a downside. If it were used to launch all of our trash into the sun, then our civilization could become even more wasteful than it already is.

Back to the original thread topic though, I believe that nuclear power is by far the best solution to our current problems.
