u can always look at a question and make a a negative one when u have a narrow mind. but what im asking was which one do u perfer more and why? They are def different but if u take some time and thinka bout the difference then dats wut seprate one from another(for U). I listen to all music, none is bad, but i perfer trance more cause of the energy and its more danceable for me. Prog is nice when listening on car or just chillin but when i go to a club i rather hear some hard and faster beats.

It's not that I have a narrow mind, it's that you never properly defined what it is we're supposed to be talking about.

And then, inevitably (as always), such definitions will lead to arguments by some (i.e. "THAT AIN'T PROG YOU F@#$%^@*#*#@*# n00b!", and down the path of more bitterness. Alas.

i personally think Trance is better than Prog because it has more energy and can always take you to another level.(Higher)

you are being vague by just saying progressive.

progressive is not a genre by itself.

therefore only by placing a genre such as progressive house, prog trance, it makes a complete genre.

i love prog trance and house sometimes, when i get bored with uplifting trance.

I personally think its a little...stupid to name any genre or sub genre "progressive * insert music type* I mean for example if a rock band produces an album that is progressive theres no need to call it progressive rock...just call it rock. Its natural for talented artists to produce something progressive, but the reason they should be doing this is to change, or better the genre, not create a whole new genre.

In my opinion its a terrible idea to make progressive trance a genre. This says that "trance" has to sound like "this." "progressive trance" sounds like "that." So it sort of stifles trances growth opportunities by limiting it to a certain sound. All trance shouldnt sound the same, thats just plain boring. Trance shouldnt stay the same for ever...thats equally as boring.

i agree the branding music is limiting its growth. I think all msuic falls as either good or .

To your querstion about trance vs. progressive....

I would say that there are some very good progessive tracks out there that do have energy. The question should be in regaurds to setting the mood for the night and building a set BOTH progressive and trance help in doing that. yes you do find alot more "trance" tunes that bring energy but they question is do you always want to bring people up and up. There becomes a point even through its uplifting that people get tired of it and want something else.Thats where building a set becomes critical. Taking people on journeys , building peaks and valleys means that you need to open your sets to all music. The more important question is whether the music you choose , reguarless of its "brand", is good or crap. Just cuz someone plays trance doesnt mean his set is going to rock , he might have just picked a bunch of trance tracks. Or just becuase someone plays house that doesnt mean that his music is better than anything else. I really would like people to start foicusing on the music and less on people, images, and hype. Follow your heart and ears and truely be an artist!! Isnt that why alot of choose to be dj's??

me, I listen to what I like, does not matter what genre it is, I view it as just music.

I think the original intent of this thread is to tell what your personal preference is (progressive house/trance or uplifting trance) and why. So, I'll answer this.

I prefer progressive house/trance over uplifting trance anyday. There are a couple of reasons for this. I feel progressive is more complex and layered, has more danceability to it from the slower groove, and generally sounds more real world and lifelike to me. Uplifting trance just seems to lack these things IMO and sounds a tad cheesy to me.

Now comes why. I have been playing two musical instruments for the last 8 years. Once I got into high school, I joined our Wind Ensemble, which is the best of the best symphonic bands at my school. I have played some of the most beautiful compositions; both of Gustav Holst's Suites, many works by Grainger, and a piece called Morning Star by David Maslanka. Now, these pieces are very detailed and intricate and have many small melodies that weave in and out. Hence, I like music that is layered and complex. There is just something intriguing about that and I generally look for this in music.

As for danceability, I prefer more of a slower, bump n grind type of beat instead of an all-out spasmic energy beat. That is how I dance.

And with being more lifelike, I think the pads, synths, and type of mood portrayed in progressive house/trance seem more real, more like real world sounds (ie Steve Porter - Deported). Plus the gritty basslines are very cool. Trance seems to be too "fantasy" for me. I'm more of a serious person, maybe that is why.

There's my opinion and my reasons. Feel free to disagree with me, as music is subjective. But at least I can supply reasons for my choice.

I was trance only at the start of my EDM craze but I've branched out and I enjoy it more because I don't get sick of playing one genre to death. I got CDs that range the entire spectrum of EDM and I rather just pick a CD based on what I want to listen to that day.
