Congress brought twin bills, S. 89 and HR 163 forward this year, http://www.hslda.org/legislation/na...s89/default.asp entitled the Universal National Service Act of 2003, "to provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons [age 18--26] in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes." These active bills currently sit in the committee on armed services.

Dodging the draft will be more difficult than those from the Vietnam era.

College and Canada will not be options. In December 2001, Canada and the U.S. signed a "smart border declaration," which could be used to keep would-be draft dodgers in. Signed by Canada's minister of foreign affairs, John Manley, and U.S. Homeland Security director, Tom Ridge, the declaration involves a 30-point plan which implements, among other things, a "pre-clearance agreement" of people entering and departing each country. Reforms aimed at making the draft more equitable along gender and class lines also eliminates higher education as a shelter. Underclassmen would only be able to postpone service until the end of their current semester. Seniors would have until the end of the academic year.

It freaked me out last year when they started talk of a draft, and it still freaks me out now, that it's still a possibility. I wish we'd just get the hell out of Iraq already... :nervous:

that is ty. this is kind of a different issue but i am totally anti military. i dont know if that makes me not patriotic or what but i could never fit into the mold that they try to make people in the military. plus i HATE violence and i dont beleive in the war they are fighting. i dont know what i would do if drafted. if we cant go to canada, how about mexico?

I just don't understand the necessity for a draft.

It was needed for the large scale world wars and even the moderately large vietnam war, but how is it necessary for iraq and afghanistan? We're finished with taking places over, so do we seriously need a draft just for the purposes of maintaining our positions?

In any case, one of the best features of democratic government is accountability of public officials. So, if it comes down to the choice between pulling out of Iraq and a draft, there is no way in hell that a draft would be chosen. It would be political suicide.

No.

Not only are recruitment targets being met, but re-enlistment rates are exceeding retention goals.

I would rather be thrown in jail than serve in the US military.
