Ok.
I've now received two demo CDs with this "genre" genre listed as the style.. doing a little search (on TA as well) I found a reference to "CJ Bolland - The Prophet" as being part of this genre..
Can someone please explain to me, this genre.
Is it like hard dance, where everyone who thinks they're uberleet classes what they place as "Dark Trance" yet its really just uplifting trance or boring ty prog? Just like people who play hard dance classify anything that's a good tune and "harder than house" as being part of this genre  |

Right or not, these are what I consider "dark trance" :)
Tiesto - Traffic, Love Comes Again (if it didn't have vocals..)
Wippenberg - Fire (my #1 track right now)
Scott Mac - Damager 03
Cosmic Gate - Different Concept
Anything with the synths tuned down... it's just a bit fresh and original to me...
PS. Played my first BIG party tonight... just playing prog/house.. I did okay, messed up the first few but did well for the rest. I played all the big house tracks too... one girl came up to me and asked for me to burn a copy of Love Story Vs Finally by itself on a CD :D |

when i see the words 'dark trance' i think of something kinda spooky, i dunno, like not really uplifting but not too proggy. try some digital blonde tracks, 'Kung Fu Rodriguez - Streak (Original Mix)', 'Arc In The Sky - Vaniquer', 'Azior - Deep And Inside (Original Mix)', 'miika kuisma - orion (misja helsloot remix)', 'Push - Electric Eclips (Tranqua Remix)' try some of those. thats what i kinda think it is. also some psy trance is kinda dark but thats just the way i think it means. :) |

I'd hardly classify CJ Bolland - The Prophet as "dark trance", more like techno to me.
Dark trance has a more sinister feel to it (devoid of gurning hands in the air, i need to hug someone moments), alot of people i think confuse dark with hard. You can have slower dark stuff (i.e. check out the Yunus set floating around from Istanbul, or even check out Juno Reactors Luciana album which is dark ambient - sure to give you horrible nightmares if you should ever be misfortunate enough to fall asleep with it playing).
I would consider John Fleming to be a proponent of dark trance for example.
From off the top of my head I would consider the following as "dark 'insert random decriptor here' trance"
Xenomorph (all tracks/albums i.e. Cassandras Nightmare, Qlippoth)
Dark Soho - Gothic Prayer
Dark Soho - Suckobus
Anne Clark - Our Darkness (total eclipse remix)
Metatron - Shangri-La
ASYS - DJ/Acid Nightmare (pretty much most ASYS stuff and others off tracid traxx)
Azior - Sunset at Myvatn
Subsphere - Infinite/Sweetfragrance
Amoeba Assasin - Speedway Revisited
Arome - Visions of Paradise (Scot Project mix)
Most of the J00F label
Quivver - Space Manouvers part 3
The Horrorist - One Night in NYC
etc... |

| You should ask Jon Noonan. He's been labelled the king of 'Dark Trance' in Perth according to the Outbreed IV Flyer :haha: |

I think the problem is that that these days, people confuse a description with a genre.
Someone is describing what the music sounds like, it doesn't have to be a genre unto itself.
That said, I don't think The Prophet could really be described as "dark trance" .. like someone else said, "dark trance" is just dark, evil sounding trance music. Artists like F&W, DJ Choose, etc. |

Brainbug - Nightmare........ The original and still the best! :D
Dark trance is really (in general) just an offshoot of the darker elements of psytrance in my experience. It is most certainly not a genre of its own! However, in this genre-mad society of ours - whos to say what classifies as a genre and what as just a description! |

well i suppose it would be what i like to play a lot of.
I have never really called it dark trance, more just driving trance. J00F style.
Also tracks like Mark Norman - Phantom manor would be one.
Kinda techy, driving, proggy trance rather than the really predictable uplifting melodies. |
