The prime minister of Canada has released a campaign commercial which says
"You can have a country like Canada or you can have a country like the U.S.. But you cant have a country like Canada with the taxation levels of the U.S." he goes on to say we take care of each other and cherish those type of values (in reference to health care).
Some people in the media were trying to say it is an insulting commercial.
Do you agree? |

ok i found it:
Canada:
$0 - $32,138: 16%
$32,183 - $64,368: 22%
$64,368 - $104,648: 26%
>$104,648: 29%
US:
$0 $6,000----- 10%
$6000 $26,250 ------ 15%
$26,250 $63,550 ------27%
$63,550 $132,600------- 30%
$132,600 $288,350 ------35%
> $288,350 - - - - -38.6%
ok so Canada and US have diff tax brackets, kinda difficult to compare interest rates. so nevermind about my tax comment |

The Liberals may probably lose their election in Canada to the Conservatives.

I've read the CP of Canada's platform and it's really quite reasonable, so we'll see how well they govern.
The main problem with the US Republicans is that the Fundies and Neocons who have infiltrated the party pass legislation that restricts civil liberties.

I'm not insulted.
The Canadian system of healthcare is far superior to the US system, where millions go without proper healthcare. |

Come on Canadian money is going to waste.
The USA has higher taxes than Canada and it is only so because its a superpower.
Canada has no military or research to worry about, they could fund healthcare completely with lower taxes. Oh wait, they are. |

Dont be fooled, we pay large taxes here. On everything. Theres an easy formula, All income from Jan - July goes to the govt and the rest is yours. |

Well, its going to be an interesting month. There is allot of mis directed anger with the ontario liberals. I think the dust will settle over this month. I too want to vote fed PC or CP as I am a strong supporter of Ontario PC party. However, it worries me that S. Harper could be prime minister. I dont think he can run this country and represent it globally. Paul martin is a far better leader but his "new" party really has to prove themselves. I think or at least hope that when it comes down to the poll, martin will win a minority govt.
As we have learned, election promises cannot be depended on i.e. Dalton fuken McGuinty. It has to be about track record. I would like to give martin a chance to implement his ideas. |

just wondering, do you have GST or PST in America? Like, what is the amount of tax you have to pay when you buy stuff? Its 7% GST here.
As for health care, i think the US have better health care facilities and doctors than here. Many doctors here go down to the US because the pay is higher. And for the health care system between the two countries, thats arguable. |

Not at the federal level. But many states, if not all, have a state sales tax which normally ranges from 4-8% depending on the state, and it's only paid by the end consumer of a good. It also may not be charged on everything, depending on the state. Some states don't charge sales tax for food or school supplies. And in all states, you avoid sales tax by purchasing things from other states over the internet - there is no cross-border collection. If I am in Wisconsin, and buy a hard drive from California through a place like Newegg.com, I don't pay any tax on the transaction.
Note that with the US tax rates, it is extremely rare for people to pay the full amount on their income, as there are numerous ways to get deductions. (That's why we have a huge federal tax code). For example, if you own a home and have a mortgage, the interest is deductible from your income. My interest on my student loan debt is deductible. Many purchases that people make that can also be used for business are deductible, and so on. |
