EU elections

on june 13 (UK 10th i think?) is the election to the european parliament
i don't know if anyone here cares about it but yeah perhaps :p
anyhow, i think i am going to vote for Folkpartiet who's a member of the "The European Liberal Democrats and Reformers" group in the parliament.
Here's a list of groups + some info about their policies:
The European Liberal Democrats and Reformers (ELDR)
-Open up EU to make it more democratized.
-Fight discrimination
-Personal freedom > war on terror
-Make a REAL single market in europe.
-fight the bureaucracy of the EU's institutions.
-Making europe the leader of environmental protection and public health problems
-make globalisation work for everyone (opening up EUs markets, targeted aid)
-Reform the common agricultural policy (!!!!!!!!!!)
-Europe shall speak with one voice in world affairs (and use force when necessarily)
Group of the European People's Party (EPP)
-Common voice in world affairs and common use of force
-promote human rights in the whole world.
-Fight terrorism
-Fight illegal immigrants.
-Ecomomic growth
-Research and Education
-Open up EU to make it more democratized
-better environment / food
-protect the farmers :rolleyes:
Socialist Group (PSE)
Bah, something wrong with their website, so i couldn't check their policies =/
European United Left/Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL)
no info at their website really :S guess they suck anyway ;) seems like the parties in the group have really different opinions too.
Union for Europe of the Nations Group (UEN)
basically anti EU parties. stands for the freedom of nations to decide.
The Greens/European Free Alliance (Greens/EFA)
-A lot of environmental policies (obviously ;))
-Human rights
-gender equality
-promote social issues
-protect public services
-harmonized corporate taxes
-Promote free software :toocool:
-Stimulate euro film industry :wtf:
-stimulate euro sports
-one seat in the UN security concil
-make EU institutions more open and green
Group for a Europe of Democracies and Diversities (EDD)
Also anti EU, but more. |

Heh, it's a hard decision...I know that I won't be able to vote for the EU parliament for at least 3 more years until we join the EU, but even if I could, there is no party that supports large scale space program, nuclear power, federative government and big science investments. So I guess I'd either go with ELDP or maybe the PSE...
Would you care to post some sort of an overview of those parties' programs? I'm too lazy to search for all of them. |

have updated my first post with some info about the groups. i'm not sure about everyones policies, but this is from their websites so :) and don't forget that this is just groups, there may be different opinions within them :)

i think ur idead of voting for the ones u said is good but as i told u yeah i think the EPP got some interesting ideas ....but yeah we need to reform a lot of things in UE
mmh about france we got 41 parties so yeah don't expect i do like erik ....it would take too much time and btw here even the parties don't really care about being european deputy ...it's just one more function and not a function itself ...lack of motivation and lack of informations for the citizens ....i guess an another reason why almost no one cares here about these elections ...:rolleyes: |

What candidate is advocating that you leave the EU. You appear to be from Ireland (like myself) so I should know of whoever you're on about.
Anyway I haven't decided myself. I must look into it in more detail and vote for whoever I believe hold the interests of the people of my constituency in highest priority. Going by some of the MEPs we have at present that isn't the case. They seem to be more interested in fitting in with the 'big boys' regardless of what's happening at home.
Those candidates who, if elected, will become part of the EPP will not be getting my vote. I'm completely against Common Security and Defence Policy and the further erosion of what's left of our neutrality. From what I can see they are the biggest players in this area. |

The vast number of socialist parties is just an indication of the socialists not being able to join forces.:)
I'm not totally sure, but I do not think that each of the socialist parties carry the same weight as the right wing/liberal parties do, in terms of seats. That may be a vain hope on my part, though. |
