Why are bad words bad?

For really, I always hear people cringe at certain words, but in the end, I only think of them as words, just labels put over meanings.
I don't think it is the alcohol talking, this is something that has perplexed me in the past, why keep certain words away from kids, why keep them off tv and radio...
I seriously cannot think of a good reason why we try to ban certain words....hopefully one of you bright young fellows can assist me. |

| In the end it's all an arbitrary set of rules, but it's those rules that supposedly separate civilized people from non-civilized people. So to swear heedlessly would mean that you're uncivilized. |

It annoys the hell out of me. Its just a form of expression after all.
The only good thing is that if all words were "allowed" and considered as just words then it would be harder to offend someone. Calling them a whoring head probably wouldn't offend.
And that'd be hell for some of our more literal members here on TA. :p |

....
or you could look at it another way. bad words are bad because they mean bad things??!!!?!?!!!
for example: calling someone a whore isnt exactly good to hear for the other person right? calling someone a ing son of a bitch is the same thing. if you heard that even if it wasn't classified as bad words, you would not feel all good after hearing that..
so i guess that's why bad words are bad. |

its for the same reason people tell you to shut up if you sit there and do deep throated growls and pant and drool and go ing psycho if you stub your toe.
its not so much the word, its the fact that they represent very base and disturbing emotions of rage, hate, disgust, and sexual degeneracy. You could make up your own swear word that mean "I want to rip your tongue out through a wound in your chest" and it wouldnt bother anyone until they understood what it meant. There is a common set of words that are generally understood and accepted.
now, I think you all have to agree that bad words arent so bad these days. THey are understood to be sentence modifiers these days and no real harm meant by them. So like what I just used doesnt bother the out of people like it once would have.
Televisions use of this really reflects how much its changed. They use , damn, , etc... and in 1995 couldnt say any of that.
Co-workers in offices, and bosses can say it with impunity. I dont know if our societies will ever have any "bad" words again just because we are all becoming so watered down we dont want to offend anyone and reciprocally we dont want to be offended. So we just ignore everything around us in the hopes that no one if offended, then pass it off as Puritanism if they do...
It shows a lot about cultures and societies mentalities, I think. |

| It's just plain dumb. When they censor the words and after that, someone hears/sees the complete, uncensored thing, they immediately know that it's a bad word and that it can be used to offend someone... then they blame the TV for the unproper programs. |

| I know it varies from country to country & how people interpret words, But I think there will always be 'swear' or 'offensive' words, simply as there are usually going to be situations when people would be tempted to use one, Think a few years ago Fuck wasn't accepted as much and now its common place on tv & in a lot of everyday things, cunt is another that I find inoffensive but some find it offensive, so I think it's a lot to do with interpretation :) |
