Let's talk about producing awesome trance melodies...How an proffesional producer like armin or pvd find some good melody for their tracks? Is it in dream or they play piano and trying combinations:) Anybody know something about this?

this has been discussed too often dude
try searching this forum, melodies progression, music theory, help on melodies it's all there within 2 clicks. Great invention that search button isn't it?

I think the thread's more about inspiration and stuff rather than the technical aspects. You can know plenty music theory and still not be able to instantly come up with a good, catchy melody.

Anyway, if I'm trying to think of a good melody I might just be messing about on my keyboard or even guitar, and keep the melody in my head, or sometimes it even comes to me when I'm writing in notes on Reason and I try different timings out and stuff. There's no set way to come up with a good melody (dunno if mine are actually any good but I'm really just talking about coming up with a half-decent melody :p)

inspiration.. i just jump right into cubase..

as for melodies, i tend to borrow elements from other melodies.. either the melodic rythem or the chord progression (sometimes both) and build from that.. never the actual melody or even part of it, of course.. it's ok to steal ideas so long as they're good ones :p

as for the actual creative part of the melody, i tend to start with the tonic of the first chord in my progression and place the notes somewhat randomly (easier to do with long notes) and then listen and and adjust as to what melody I can hear within the notes.. sort of hard to explain :)

that's a good question! if you finally find the answer... please pm me! ;) xDDDDDD

No, let's get serious: I guess there can be 2 cases: they have skills and knowledge and they only have skills (there are another ones: "no skills no knowledge = you can imagine" and "only knowledge = good musical critic").

In the worst case, that is, no knowledge about composition nor arrangement... you should manage to hold a little piano or keyb, so you can play notes and chords and self-teach listening to when something sounds right or not. Once, or at the same time, you've got that "knowledge", a good way to free your mind and be able to develop melodies, is trying to sing a melody over any classic song you like. Yes, it's not so easy to improvise a melody that goes well (harmonicaly correct) and in a given phrase, because every melody should have an exposition and an ending. If you get used to doing that, then, when you play chord series, you'll find easily a melody that fits for them.

Uh... go and think about buying a voice recorder. I know about people that record everything they hear or spontaneously sing, to add later to their productions.

They have little midgets locked in the basement that write melodies for them.

Sometimes Armin lets them out, here is one of those midgets at the last ASOT party.

Not exactly sure how the pro's do it, but the way I do it is usually messing around on my Alesis QS 6.1. ;-) Usually at the same time I will be putting something in on FL Studio. Sometimes, however, I just think I have a brilliant melody in my head and attempt to write it down, although I really don't have perfect pitch off the top of my head.

they were born with it. they have a certain standard, and they know when something is good, or when something isn't right and needs to be changed. A lot of it comes from experience too.

If that doesn't work do a couple lines and take some speed.

there's a thread about this inspirationdiscussion too already :)

but anyway, I just play around...or sometimes I come up with a melody on the way to the bus or on the bus.

it's different everytime I come up with something great and I think that's the case for 95% of all producers out there in the world (both famous and infamous)
