Hmm, before i start asking the question, it mite sound weird, because basiclly i am not sure if what am saying actually is correct.
Now for the people thjat believe in God, they avoid this word, because it's wrong cursing god.
But here is the question, for the people that do not believe in god, they say it and don't care, but why damn something that you don't believe?
the word comes out when you are angry, frustrated, mad, or sometimes suprised for example.
So why damn god when you don't believe in god?
maybe it's stupid topic, i don't know, but i hardly create any in COR :p
Discuss :D
PS, i ain't defending anything or saying stop cursing god just a question. |

I think its more colloquially used as "God Damn ____"
you want him to damn something. Which is wrong, because damnation is terrible, plus you have no right to judge. |

| I think people hear other people saying it and then start saying it themselves. It's not too much different from saying "Jesus Christ" when you're pissed...people just do it I guess. I personally think people should refrain from saying "God dammit" and such, it's not too hard just to say "dammit." |

That's not what it means. At all, in fact, as some of us are already pointing out.
"The goddam thing" = a shortened form of "The God-dammned thing", i.e. something that the Lord has already condemned. Somewhat presumptuous if you ask me.
"Aw, Goddammit!!" = a shortened form of "God damn it!", a request that a divine presence should damn or eradicate your woes. Such requests are usually ignored. :D
"Somebody say goddam!!" = meaningless. |

Ermmm what kind of swearing is that lol. I hope you don't use it in arguments ^^
But as two people stated Goddammit is actualy a curse, a request to have something damned by god.
Most swearings find their origins in curses. New ones like F*ck You don't realy mean anything if you think about it.
Jezus Christ is mostly yelled out of amazement. Just like the witnesses to Jezus is his resurrection might have been amazed aswell. Another explanation might be that when people feel they cannot control a situation, that they call upon the divine intervention of Jezus.
Most cultures have strong language involving curses. Sometimes refering to diseases or death (ex: drop death) and at other times to members of the family (ex: ya momma).
Swearing can also refere to acts that are seen as immoral or religiously/socialy unacceptable (ex: MoFo, Son Of A B*tch (actualy Witch), Bast*rd, Your so gay, sissy)
Also animals are frequently used but that's usualy more out of mockery than insult (ex: pig, fat cow, lapdog, chicken) |
